Seeing some of the very long lines at polling places has made me curious. In 30+ years of never missing an election I've never done anything but arrive at the location, sign-in, vote, leave, no waiting involved.
I voted Saturday at the Berkeley County, WV, early voting center and waited exactly an hour. They had about 20 machines going, and told me they'd had more than 10,000 early voters in the county so far. That's out of about 75,000 adults.
I live in a small Florida county and went on the first day of early voting. It was crowded and steady but there were no waits. I have heard of waits this past week though.
There were lots of happy faces and many people didn't mind the wait after coming from a long day's work
Yes, this year, the cheerful energy of the crowd is going to make an election line the "happening" place to be. A party atmosphere. In fact, I bet a few people will end up meeting their future spouse while waiting in line. Talk about a great story to tell your grandkids.

They had a news clip yesterday running showing some of the lines in a few metro areas and I was just astonished! They were huge and wait times were upwards of several hours.
I have to wonder, how on God's green earth did people all manage to vote on a single day in the past? A good number of states have early voting open for a fair number of days and yet still there are lines.
I wondered that as well, TNhill- but on a news story last night they were discussing Broward county and waits of almost 5 hours last night.
For early voting they have 17 polling locations. On election day there will be over 300 polling places.
In my county there are three early voting locations- on election day there will be about 12.
That differential should spread the crowds considerably. However, I wonder how many voting stations are at each early location versus those that will be at the locations on Nov 4. Are the total for the counties distributed among the early spots and will they be redistributed in smaller numbers?
Agreed, how did voting all on Nov. 4th ever happen before? Thank God for early voting, it started here three weeks before the election. I went to the polling place two weeks early and if I saw a long line, I would come back the next day. I didnt see a line and waited less than 10 min., I'm grateful how patient Americans are when it comes time to vote.
The stories of 8 hour waits in Ohio in 2004 were ridiculous. Further investigation into that finds out it was deliberate. However, this time around it seems that with early voting much of this can be avoided
Here in the Phoenix Metro areas, there were polling places with waits in excess of 6 hours.
