Actually, though California's 55 electoral votes have gone to Democrats in the last few elections (four, I think?), in reality it's the big cities that make it so. The smaller counties and towns are steadfastly Republican.

The last time California elected a Republican was George Bush Sr. in 1988, and before that of course it was Reagan's state. Fortunately, not all of California is like San Diego, Orange, Riverside, or Santa Barbara County politically.

Santa Barbara county has been Blue for several years & both Riverside & San Bernardino counties are expected to also vote for Obama. Even Fresno county! The GOP are finding their territory shrinking to just Orange & Kern plus a few other Central Valley counties
