I haven't felt that here at all. I am happy and I think a lot of people are. I live in a "red" state, and I haven't heard anything bad here. It's funny because where I used to live in California, I felt more racial tension than I do here in Tennessee. From what I've observed & experienced, people from all races "seem" to get along and co-exist better here in Tennessee. I used to believe that "the South" was way more segregated and intolerant, but the reality is, it is worse in California.
I don't see Barak Obama as just an "African American" president. He is half caucasian and half African, which I think gives him a better and broader perspective and understanding towards the American people. I am optimistic and I do believe he has the best intentions at heart.
One more thing (just outta curiosity & fun), if my son were to be elected a future American President, what would he be "considered", being his ethnic/racial background of: 1/4 italian, 1/4 irish, 1/4 german, and 1/4 hispanic? Does this make him hispanic (he has an hispanic last name too)? Just wondering..........

Being open minded is not the same thing as being socially aware. Race and racism has been the 900lbs gorilla in the room for as long as there has been a United States, the problem is that for the last 20 or so years, no one has wanted to acknowledge it.
Well, now the gorilla is out and tearing up the room, which is a good thing, because now we are confronted by it and will have to deal with it, perhaps for the last time.
What makes you think that the gorilla is actually making things better rather than messing things up more? I don't think that by throwing racism out there to talk about is going to make things better. I think it's going to stir things up and maybe we are going to see MORE racial tensions. I'm not saying ignore racism all together, but we need to deal with it with OPEN MINDS! If you need further explanation, just ask.

I think this election opened a lot of people's eyes to just how much racism there still is in this country. I know I was very surprised when I first started reading this forum.
I was surprised when a friend's white mother said a black man could never be elected in the US.
I was surprised when my black boyfriend said the same thing.
I think we should talk about it! Old racists coddling their ideas and forcing hate on their children- it needs to stop. Now is the time to stand up to it and rid us of it once and for all.
Why on earth would you ask that a woman be qualified for president? It wasn't a requirement for Barack Obama, all people cared about was that he had the judgment to be president.
