wouldnt want a peace symbol there either but that is their choice to fly it.
No it isn't their choice to fly it. The state capitol is a public institution.
in philly during what they call the equality forum(a gay rights org.) the city flies the rainbow flag which is very offensive to me and to many in this community, but the city does it anyway and proudly. So if the city can fly the rainbow flag then the state is well in its rights to fly the rebel flag--fair is fair
If it's a public building they shouldn't fly it. Anyone else wants to fly it, that's their business.
And we can share any opinion we like about the rainbow flag crowd, but this much is certain: they never committed treason against the United States like your ancestors did. When the rainbow flag is hoisted over an army shooting at Americans, then I agree it should join the Confederate flag in a place more fitting its status -- at the bottom of a pit latrine.
I don't mean this to be a personal attack on you, yap city. I'm just pointing out, as has been posted earlier in the thread, that the original symbolism of the Confederate flag has been distorted, and today it is used to denigrate another group of people who have already been historically repressed through no fault of their own. Is removing it from public offices really such a big concession?
I agree the flag should not be flown, but as I said in my previous post, for different reasons. I take issue with those who associate the flag with slavery simply because there were PLENTY of folks NORTH of the Mason-Dixon that had slaves. Yes, the flag is a symbol of slavery and hatred to some, but that flag to others is a symbol of their southern heritage, and has NOTHING to do with slavery in their minds. That's all I'm saying.
I'm only trying to get those discussing the issue to look at both sides of the argument. It's called being "fair"
....as unpopular as that might be to some.
...and no, no personal attack felt at all. Attack my views and opinions as much as you like. Thats how we learn from each other
sprtluver, i wont go back and forth with you on this issue, i respect your right to hate that flag if you like and I never said it wasnt offensive to some people, because it is.
the rainbow flag is a symbol of deviance and immorality, so it is offensive to me. you dont have to justify why the rebel flag is offensive to you, so I dont have to justify why the rainbow flag is offensive to me.
As a african american and southerner born and bred in SC, I know of many blacks who are offended by that flag, probably most. But I also know many who arent. I go hunting and fishing with some great brothas I have been friends with since grade school and some have rebel flag caps, some have rebel flags on their license plate--and some went to openly protest any removal of it from the state house.
I personally am not for it or against it. I have a masters in Southern History and i recognized both sides of the issue. and as this is a country of freedom, all sides have a right to their opinions. I am not going to change a racists mind by removing a symbol and I am not going to change someones mind about the flags symbol of Southern heritage.
If people are offended, hey they will be--but forcing others to remove symbols form city streets as the rainbow flag is in some northern cities is just as bad as trying to shout down someone and take down the battle flag because some part of the state of SC is offended.
I'll certainly take issue with FFH. He/she insulted me by saying my ancestors committed treason. I would like to know exactly what act of treason he/she is referring to.
Hmmm... I suddenly feel the strange attraction and need to fly a flag. I also feel a paintball war coming on if hostilities from intrutive flag flying incursions are not ceased.
i fly the State flag of SC the Palmetto and the Cresent and the Am flag everyday. The state flag of SC was also used by the Confederacy, but I dont see anyone trying to remove that.

I have seen it many times in Ohio and thought o myself just how out of place it was. It has actually even irritated me a few times. If I thought it stood for racism I would be really upset. But I think to most people it just means southern pride or being a rebel. I have seen northern folks who have rebel flags and rings and stuff. Although I do suddenly feel a great urge to do a covert ops paintball mission on some of our rebel neighbors.
We use to have bottle rocket wars and m80's(and whatever else we had around the Fourth of July) here in Florida when I was younger. Happened one night when everyone was hanging out and someone grabbed a rebel flag. I seen the opportunity to lead a northern yanks division into the backyard and commence bombardment of our rebel neighors. It lasted about a week off and on.
