If I had bed spins looking at that, I'd puke into the monitor.

That looks like a beautiful bird crippled by being caught by a bloody net.

Here's one showing the states resized by population. Less freaky but still freaky.

Oh it's quite meaningful: most of the U.S. is not blue. If it were divided into two countries based on that map (from the first post in this thread)...the blue country wouldn't be too big, and would be mighty hungry. The reds control most of this country's land and resources. The blues simply consume.

In this map, if New Mexico stuck out it's tongue, it would look like a zipper. New Jersey, in contrast, looks like Jojo Giorgiani.

Someone should put some brown next to Atlantic City.

While I would object to the use of the term "socialist" in this context, your statement is essentially correct. Country people tend to be more self-sufficient and less integrated (and dependent upon) greater society as a whole. This is perfectly natural and understandable - they they have a greater ability to do things like grow their own food if necessary. That's pretty hard to do if you live in a high-rise condo in the middle of a big city. Folks in a big city are far more dependent upon cooperation with each other to provide for their basic needs. They NEED the water, power and sewer infrastructure the government provides - as well as the cooperation of their neighbor the grocery worker, the truck driver and the power plant employee.
