What I find incredible is that when this topic is usually raised, it is the liberal side that usually says no, because it provides a low cost labor force that undercuts worker's wages. So as a practice, I would say that if you want your children to participate in community activities, it is a good thing, but it can have a deliterious effect on the labor prices. That said, school is government mandated, and it is a positive thing, as can be perfectly contrasted to countries that do not have compulsory education. When my kids were in school, they chose the community service they wanted to participate in, one was ministering to kids who lived on the streets on Las Vegas, and the other was involved in a social justice community theater group. Their friends worked in Mormon Church projects, prochoice and antiabortion projects, envrionmental, animal rescue, etc. It was not a government decided service, just that they spent time in their community.

So now that we have cleared up that mandated and required are the same thing we can move on.

Absolutely, welfare recepients should be working for their money. You get a welfare check, you're physically able to work? Get out there and do some community service. And all those teenage kids who are so "bored" so they cause trouble...they should be out there too....painting over graffiti, planting community gardens, thugging less and getting off their dufts to improve their communities instead of waiting for a handout. This could go so many places but I have a feeling it will (the program) be mismanaged, consist of fraud, etc. ANd...not every kid wants to go to college nor do they need to, so what do we do about that? I know that when I graduated high school, I didn't know what I wanted to study so I put off college and went into the military. What do we do about those kids?

Exactly, they act like this is a "socialist" idea!!!! Good schools prepare well rounded students for successful lives as adults. I guess the point is that school are supposed to help turn children into adults, not keep them as children.

I went to private schools when I was young and public schools for high school. In the private school we were required, not voluntary, to clean the school grounds, bathrooms, do basic community service like visit nursing homes, get involved in the heart association, do environmental clean up, etc. It was part of your overall grade. In the public high school, you could get a general diploma without doing community service, but if you did, very few people in the area would hire you for after school work, and the local colleges did not consider that the good diploma, they wanted to see the diploma that included community service. In las vegas, if you get to go the magnet schools, there is a bit of a community service requirement too, or at least there was.
That's fine but you're comparing to different things. A private school policy is completely different than a federal government mandate. I have no issue with community service. I have an issue with it being mandated by the federal government. Sorry no obtuseness here.
