Certainly nothing wrong with encouraging and is a noble cause however requiring is truly beyond belief.
What a great idea! Chief complaints I hear among many adults are how kids today have no idea of what work is, how to give back some of what they get and that they're used to just having things handed to them. This would be an ideal way to teach kids these lessons in a very matter-of-fact way and I'll bet the kids would find a way to interject a lot of fun into it. Kids typically do.
Kids around here love getting involved in various efforts, like the food drive we're having right now for the holidays, and recycling. I'll bet this could be a really good thing.
Allow market economics to work. Give every parent a voucher and let them decide where their kid should be educated. Schools which do not perform will fail and schools which are successful will succeed.
Throwing money at the problem in order to prop up failing schools is the last thing that will increase our students' knowledge base.
If Obama learned anything from the Chicago Annenberg Challenge....
Our local schools have a community service program. It includes collecting for food pantries. trash cleanup, and in some cases Voc school kids do minor home repairs and weatherization for seniors. We have a couple young people that do their community service as volunteer firemen. It's a good program and the young people enjoy it.
We're talking about college costs and finding ways for our kids to afford a college education so that we are not academically left on the dust by other countries!!
You can't make kids learn. The ones that want to do good in school and get scholarships.....no amount of money, time or punishment is going to force someone to learn.
Choice? yes, that's what I'm talking about too. I want all our kids to have a choice as to whether they go to college or not.
I want for all kids to have that opportunity. And a more cost effective way to ensure that.
If everyone has a chance to go to college, then a college degree becomes even more worthless. We're already seeing a devaluation of education in our society due to government involvement.
It used to be that a high school education was proof of basic competency. Now that our K-12 schools are crap, employers look for a college diploma, at least that way they know the employee can read, write, and communicate effectively.
Improve K-12 and college won't be a necessity for employment anymore.
My high school had a community service requirement and I think its a good thing. It's a good way to develop a sense of community and civic pride. I have no problem with it.
Mine also....That fire dept. I volunteered at didn't have anything to do. When I was younger I would have been more than happy to sit around and do nothing for $40/hr. Does that even sound remotely motivating? I know some places will work you to death for volunteer serve. When money enters cost comparisons versus rewards or benefits must be included. To do that you need governmental oversight. To do that you need an oversight committee to over see the oversight...

It's not a choice if it's required. You won't force people to do things they don't want....which is why I brought up the gulags....which did force people to do what the government wanted. The government had in mind that it was for the betterment of the country... The poorest of the poor were put to work and from there it turned into slave labor. The Good ole USSR.
I looked on the website again and saw no mention of requiring welfare recipients to perform community service hours in exchange for their free tax money handout.
Also, I looked to see if prisoners would be required. I know I see them occasionally on the side of the road picking up trash, but I know that those prisoners volunteered and were not required. Can't *force* prisoners to work you know. It would be inhumane.
