) Obama successfully shifted the Catholic vote in his favor this year over past elections, with 54% of Catholics voting for him and 45% voting for McCain (compared to 47/52 for Kerry/Bush respectively). Latino Catholics especially came out strong for Obama this year.
) Obama captured 78% of Jewish voters.
) Obama captured 45% of the Protestant voters, compared to 40% for Kerry.
I guess religious people do take other topics besides abortion into consideration.
For months I tried to tell everyone on here that many Catholics and Evangelicals were getting wise to the fact that the Republicans were just using our concern for the pre-born as a way to manipulate us and that we were awakening to the fact that they had been in charge 20 out of the last 28 years and still had not ended abortion...and never would because it was their big tool and fund raiser. We were also aware of the fact that the other aspects of our faith, ie; helping the poor, being good stewards of the planet, being peacemaker, were being trampled and ignored. I urged the democrats to quit mocking those of us with faith and, instead, reach out to work with us on the thing with which we agree. I think this election has proved that I was correct and I think that if the democrats realize that we of faith make better friends that enemies we can accomplish a lot together.

Agreed LML. I've even heard (and read here) some Republicans claim that all Democrats are atheists, or don't believe in God. The Republican Party's attempts at framing the debate this way seems to be coming apart.
In fact, I believe if Obama had used more centrist language regarding abortion (without changing his beliefs), his landslide would have been much larger. In our area especially, it was a deal breaker for some religious people.
I've long thought the spirit of the Democratic party is closer to the spirit of Christianity than the Republican party. I bet Democratic policies will have a bigger impact on the # of abortions than the Republican ones did. Education is the true answer to the problem- reducing unwanted pregnancies. Not making abortion illegal. That doesn't make it stop, it just makes it unsafe.
