From the article it sounds like it is the recognition that he is leaving office that did this, not the election of Obama himself:
"Mr. Bush was apparently hit by the realisation that the election signals the start of his final days in the White House after eight turbulent years."
I think Bush must be crying in part because it is finally sinking in with him how much worse the country is when he leave than when he took office - very largely due to his incompetent and self-serving leadership...
He must realize that historians will not be kind to him...

You mean that's all you got from the article? What about the quote below. You never know; maybe he truly is like many other Americans who were "touched" that an AA was elected. He is a decent man.
On that occasion Bush spoke with shiny eyes: “It will be a stirring sight to watch President Obama, his wife, Michelle, and their beautiful girls step through the doors of the White House. I know millions of Americans will be overcome with pride at this inspiring moment that so many have awaited so long.”
Rest assured - when the total unmitigated disaster called the war in Iraq finally ends and is tallied up, when the enormity of the economic damage Bush did to the country finally becomes evident over the next years, when his complete failure in foreign relations is analyzed, he will certainly go down as the worst president since 1900 - even worse than Nixon...
Don't forget his extraordinary work with Katrina!
(Oh, and except for that Watergate thingy Nixon was pretty good . . .)
Most will recognize that his administration fell far short of its potential, but he is still a better pres than Nixon or Carter, we could also throw Hoover and Truman into the mix for the last century.

Well that quote is nice and all, but it doesn't speak to the cause/effect that the OP suggested, which was this: "The historic election of Sen. Barack Obama brought President George W. Bush to tears." No, it didn't, not according to the article.
Exactly - that was why I was laughing my head off earlier. When they line up the first 43 Presidents in order of quality at least 40 of them, including Truman and Nixon - even Carter, will be ahead of Bush. Probably Harding and Buchanan too. At least Hoover wasn't a moron. We are talking the very bottom of the barrel here . . .
Okay, so is there any reason he should as president be all down and out in 2001? Why not celebrate the best of the year and have hope to improve things that did not go well?
.
Er, 9/11/2001 perhaps??
