Congressman: Obama's Senate Replacement Must Be Black
What a crock of BS. Always playing the race card.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The race to replace Barack Obama as Illinois' junior senator heated up Tuesday as Rep. Bobby Rush, D-Ill., called on Gov. Rod Blagojevich to name a black man or woman to the seat.
By invoking race, Rush, who is black, drove a potential wedge between the prospective white and black contenders for the seat. Rush said it would be a "national disgrace" if Obama's seat were not filled by an African American.
Ridiculous. I'm all for diversity but not when affirmative action is given a front seat...
Yup something I'm worried about, will an Obama presidency actually break the color barrier or in fact cause a backlash ...
Well, Obama hasn't said his replacement has to be black, and neither has Blago, to the best of my knowledge.
Nope, now if they said it that would be significant. This guy saying it might for all we know just be self promotion in that he wants the position.
Bobby Rush
Pros: Brings Blagojevich support from Chicago's electorally-powerful South Side.
Cons: Obama may not support the move since he once ran against Rush and lost in a bitter campaign. Rush may not be able to win statewide given his Black Panther past.
I agree that his replacement should be black. Obama was the only black in the Senate, and the Senate should represent us as much as possible. If we were truly a color-blind society, there would already be 10-15 blacks and 50 women. But we are a racist society, and where we can try to correct for that, we should.
Some people are under the impression that there is one person who is best qualified to fill the seat, and therefore, any affirmative action measure means that the best person doesn't necessarily get the job. That's a very simplistic view. In fact, there are hundreds of qualified people, and there are larger goals to fulfill, too. Illinois has many qualified black candidates.
