The story of The Times dithering and finally deciding to go with that story is an interesting one -

The New York Times - Talk To the Newsroom: The McCain Article

The New York Times - What That McCain Article Didn't Say

$27 million, that's...excessive, to say the least. But I guess I'd be offended too if a bunch of people thought I'd had sex with someone as old as McCain. Plus, people probably called her a homewrecker. This is quite interesting... Did the NYT actually say that they were "together" or were they commenting more on their platonic relationship and the whole FCC thing? If the NYT didn't say "affair" but people assumed it then that isn't the Times's fault.

You should be a HUGE supporter of the Fairness Doctrine, then, right?

We can get Hannity to wrote a column for the NYT, and Maureen Dowd can do a talk show following Rush.

This could work.

That's really a stretch...

The New York Times is failing as a business.

This woman was smeared in a news article that posed as a true story, not an editorial or Opinion piece - the purview of every name you mentioned - that makes no claim to be fact.

You are familiar with the differences between news reporting and commentary & editorializing, right?

As I recall, the NYTimes only reported that aides to McCain warned him to stay away from her, because they were worried about the implications. The NYTimes did not say that there was an affair.

So sweetclimber, you can untwist your knickers.

PS I'd add that this lawsuit will require that the McCain campaign divulge a lot of internal documentation. This will look bad for McCain, but won't touch the Times.
