Very cool even if it's just symbolism.

Lincoln was a product of his time. Some of his beliefs seem unpalatable today. In the future, those who accepted abortion will also look bad. Mores change. Values change. Times change and people with them.

Most of the slaves from Africa came from the west coast, and the Portuguese slave traders didn't usually go inland to find them. They bought ther cargo from chiefs who had captured members of other tribes in battle and brought them to the coast to sell.

If there weren't enough to fill the ship after they bought all they could, they simply took the chiefs and their tribesmen who had come to sell their captives to add to the tally. If there still weren't enough, they sailed down to the next port of call.

Kenya would have been a thousand miles or more out of the way on a good day and too much trouble for the Portuguese to even consider.
The biggest slave traders were the Arabs from the East side and African tribal chiefs. Europeans bought from coastal towns where slaves were assembled in slave markets for sale.

WOW! I never knew that! I guess I'll have to rethink my position!

Thanks for the update.

I am more familiar with the west side from a term paper I did for an African history course in college. My professor, Donald Abrams, was a world-class authority on the Portuguese slave trade and digressed frequently. He was referenced in most of the books I used for my paper.

East or West, the slave trade still took place on the coast, not as far into the interior of Africa as Kenya.
