I waited until after the election to read either of Obama's books- and I have read them both.

I liked Dreams from My Father more than Audacity- but I think that was because of my curiosity about Obama's background. His biography was brutally honest and the path he traveled was full of pitfalls and potholes. I never considered how difficult it might be to be a mixed race young adult who appears to be black- being raised in a white household. Especially a deep thinking young man who was intelligent enough to understand that he needed to learn where he fit.

His life was far from charmed or easy. But the challenges he faced show me that he really does understand what it's like to be a normal American trying to find your way.

I'm neither black nor of mixed ethnic heritage but I could certainly relate to a desire to find myself and struggle with determining where my place is in the world.

One of the best books I've read in a long time. I can't imagine anyone not finding a great deal of commonality with Barack Obama.

But here's what I've found about virtually every discussion of this nature. If we're honest enough with ourselves, we'll admit that most of our differences are in degrees, not in ideals. And a lot of our differences have to do with what we think is the best way to go about achieving a goal.

I've also found that discussions with those with whom I don't agree are FAR more interesting than discussions with people I agree with. I mean, seriously, where's the fun in sitting there and saying nothing but, "Yeah, that's true, I agree."?
Highlighted a key point, which I've spoken to in these forums, i.e., there are many ways to skin the cat. We can pick any topic we want; health care, SEC oversight of Wall Street, etc. Any sane adult wants all of our fellow citizens to see a Doc when sick; we agree on that BIG point, but we argue over how to make it happen, which is the lesser part of the 'ideal, though an enjoyable challenge to figure out how best to achieve it. So it goes with most topics.

I agree. He is a gifted writer. Reading the work of writers of his caliber is always great, I love C.S. Lewis as well, he was excellent!

It's just awesome to know that we have a smart president now! Eight times smarter than Bush could ever hope to be.

Did he really write the book himself?

Has anybody else read the book - or his other book, "Dreams From My Father"? What are your thoughts?

And let's try - just this once - to NOT turn this into another stupid "Bush is stupid!" or "Obama is a Muslim!" thread...
I am reading Dream From My Father, and it is a really good book. His writing is very impressive.

I didn't read the book until after President Elect Obama won election. I don't think I had the audacity to hope until he did win. I think his book is very inspirational and he is a great writer too. Even my teenager has started reading his books. In my opinion The Audacity to Hope is a must read. I think it might ease the minds of some of the "nay" sayers as well.

And to think that before the election, quotes - taken out of context of course - from these books were used by the Obamabashers (who had OBVIOUSLY NEVER actually READ the books) to "prove" that Obama was a radical Muslim socialist terrorist.

Bush likely reads more books in one month than Obama will in the next four. I love how the libs just to how brilliant their man always is. . . . just like Kerry until we all found out Bush had better college grades.

Reading books doesn't make you brilliant. Bush certainly isn't. I joked with a friend that I was going to read 186 books this year so I could be smart like Bush, and the reply was, "Are you going to be reading harlegquin? Reading books also doesn't mean that you comprehend them or remember what you have read, but I think we can safely say that Bush spent his time escaping by reading books, and that is what he has been doing all this time.

Of course, Bush's IQ is not very high, and Obama has the IQ of a genius. Saying that Kerry is not as smart as Bush isn't really saying much.
