There is a line from "Fiddler on the Roof" (one of my favorite movies) where Tevia responds to the comment, an eye for an eye;

"Soon we would be blind and toothless"

Both sides are blind, but they won't stop until they are toothless.

I thought that for headaches lasting over 100 years, one should consult one's physician.

well if you look at which US President has had the most succesful middle east policy it was Carter who brokered peace between Egypt & Israel which still stands after 30 years and Obama would be wise to use him as a envoy.
My pessimism stems from the fact that this conflict has been ongoing since I've been alive.

....LOL. Carter's POST presidential work in the Middle East is acceptable, but his "successful" Middle East policy as president is what helped Reagan win in a landslide.

And there is not stopping this conflict. It has been going on forever, and will continue to do so. The French couldn't stop it, the British couldn't stop it, the Soviets couldn't handle it, and the US has also failed.

And while the US did have major success compared to previous excursions by other powers in Afghanistan, Iraq is where we failed. I guess I am one of 'dem crazy neoconz! because I supported liberation of Afghanistan but detested the Iraq invasion.

^ frankie my point was the Camp David Accords during Carter's Presidency not the ensuing Iranian hostage crisis. He was able to negotiate peace between two nations at war instead of a bunch of rag tag ideolist students in Tehran who had no political power at the incept.
