SLEDGE, Mississippi (CNN) -- James Presley stands amid chopped cotton, the thick Mississippi mud caked on his well-worn boots. A smile spreads across his face when he talks about voting for Barack Obama and what that might mean for generations to come.

I suppose that's better than the republicans who like to claim he's a Messiah. Is Obama similar to Moses? Maybe, in a few ways. Like Moses, he's of a different race than the leaders who came before him. Both men had a way with words, and both were noted for their natural leadership abilities. And Moses might have had questions about his birth certificate.

But other than that, I don't see it. If you expect to see him parting the Potomac during the inaugural parade, you're going to be disappointed. (Note: OTOH--if I'm wrong about this and he does part the river--then I'm definitely buying the DVD!)

Obama is our Moses? Maybe, for this one poor old guy that they dug up. But most of us just see him as president. Because frankly, we don't need a Moses. What we need is a president, and that's what we've got. Obama is our President. That sounds good to me.

I think "Pharoah" might be the more appropriate term.

Moses didn't have a term limit... Moses led his people to the promised land. Is Obama going to move people somewhere?

Moses must have done a terrific Job. We are still talking about him 4,000 years later.

As a biblical figure, Moses, who delivered the Hebrews from bondage, has always loomed large in the theology of African Americans. To illustrate the point, I would offer the seminal "Negro" spiritual "Go Down Moses;"

When Israel was in Egypt's land: Let my people go,
Oppress'd so hard they could not stand, Let my People go.
Go down, Moses,
Way down in Egypt land,
Tell ole Pharoh,
Let my people go.

For the grandson of slaves to compare Obama to Moses is not only understandable but more than appropriate.

Go Down Moses, it ain't Paul Robeson but it ain't bad.

If it's just mildly interesting perhaps another thread would be more befitting of your time and interest.

Oh dear! Excuse me! I just thought maybe the OP had a POINT!

And discussions of Moses should go to the religion forum.
