Thanks for posting this - I think that many black families have similar stories and when we reflect upon them it truly makes us appreciate how far we've come as a country.

Uhhhh... the African American middle and upper class is thriving here in Houston Texas. It is very simple really, those who want to work and do well will do well here and those who just want to sit around smoking dope and acting like a thugs and blame others for their plight won't do well.

Sorry if there is more predudice in Jersey than there is here. Most people I have talked to have said that too. Having Obama as president won't change the fact that there will still be many who are just lazy dope smokers that blame others for their problems

Dang, did you even bother to read the article? It has nothing to do with all that nonsense you typed.

OMG!!! Is Obama BLACK!! but all the relatives he paraded around were white??

Why is it and the question been asked 100's of time a person that is of mixed race 50% black and 50% white is always black? If being black is so horrid and being white is so magical wouldn't they say they're white? (I have theories.)

Settle yourself down. I am sure you have no idea what it is like to be black, and being raised mixed you are probably more looked at as black.

Why are you acting like you are so oppressed when your a white dude from Kentucky?

I guess because I've never had anything handed to me because of my color, never a job, a check, a house, anything just because I'm white. I guess because I've worked my butt off for everything I have and I guess it's because I get sick of being looked at as somehow privileged simply because I am white when I struggle to make it every single day. I never claimed to be oppressed, but neither is anyone else in this country ... if you're oppressed in America it's because you choose to be.

Are you claiming to be oppressed?

When you take away the racial and cultural aspects of a "diverse" society and everyone around you is of the same hue and follows the same culture then you have a trully equal environment and each individual has to work just as hard as the rest.

Unfortounately, a lot of us in this country don't live in environments like that and the sad fact is that people look out for each other based on their similarities so, if you enter a field in which another "race" is more prevalent then you are less likely to be allowed in and, if you're allowed in, you're less likely to be as successful as your co-workers. It's just human nature and, since in this country the majority is white, those of us who are blessed with more melanin have to deal with it.

It's just like being a city slicker who suddenly moves to a small town. You could be the same hue as everyone there, follow the same religion and even have the same ideals but you'll still (at least at first) be viewed as an outsider by many and therefore treated differently. Point is that, as much as folks where you live may be trully equal, that doesn't mean that the rest of us are as lucky.
