Geithner can pay his back taxes to the government and I say he gets audited for the next 10 years ... no bearing on my taxes at all.
What Paulson did for his country club buddies with MY tax money is going to never be seen again. It's *poof* gone.
So what Geithner did was pure arrogant idiocy on his part, but again, he can pay it back ... Paulson and the Congress that endowed the biggest free money grab in history won't.

The response to the gravest financial crisis in generations has been engineered to a remarkable degree by a committee of three. From the rescue of Bear Stearns to the takeovers of Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac and American International Group (http://financial.washingtonpost.com/custom/wpost/html-qcn.asp?dispnav=business&mwpage=qcn&symb=AIG&nav=e l - broken link), all the key decisions have been made by Treasury Secretary Henry M. Paulson Jr., Federal Reserve Chairman Ben S. Bernanke and Timothy F. Geithner (http://www.washingtonpost.com/ac2/related/topic/Timothy+F.+Geithner?tid=informline - broken link), the president of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York (http://financial.washingtonpost.com/custom/wpost/html-qcn.asp?dispnav=business&mwpage=qcn&symb=BK&nav=el - broken link).
That may be so, but when your problem is related to the job in question, it might be wise to look elsewhere.
Do you have a suggestion of someone you think would be a better choice? This is not the time to conduct a lengthy search for a flawless candidate, if one even exists.
Analogy: You have just had a heart attack. You get to the hospital and find out the doctors available have each had at least one patient die under their care. Do you just sit in the reception area, determined to wait until a doctor arrives who has never had a patient die? Of course not, that would be a stupid and fatal thing to do. No, you take the best choice available and hope for the best. That's what we're doing here. The time you waste diddling around hoping to find someone flawless only makes the crisis worse.
It's more like, EVERY person who might be qualified for the job has one problem or another. Meanwhile, somebody has to get the job done.
I agree.
But it seems kind of weird that a guy who "just happened" to not pay his taxes for several years, is the new head of the Treasury Department. I don't care what President picked him, or what political party affiliation he has. I'd think President Obama would want "the brightest and the best" in key leadership positions like this. And I don't think Geithner fits that description.
I find it interesting what Senator Tom Harkin - Democrat from Iowa - said after he voted against Geithner. "How can Mr. Geithner speak with any credibility or authority?"
Do you have a suggestion of someone you think would be a better choice?
I haven't done a full search of potential people, but that's not my job. I would like to think that if I were to conduct a thorough search, I might find someone that hasn't had a tax problem that would also be qualified.
Do you have a suggestion of someone you think would be a better choice?
Well... In over 30 years, I've never "accidentally forgotten" to file and pay my taxes. What's more, when I was audited a couple years ago, it was found that everything was perfectly in order.
So in a weird way, it looks like I'm more qualified to be the head of the Treasury Department than Geithner.

Congratulations on having your taxes in order. If that was all it took to fix our economy, I'd vote for you.
