Children aren't liberals or conservatives. They're idealists, all of them. They truly do believe that if you work hard enough for something, you can get it. I think it's beautiful. Partly because it's innocent. Partly because it's so temporary...and it goes by so fast.

I'm a mom and the letters absolutely sound like they were written by children. Regarding the spelling and grammar, for one thing, the teachers probably helped them with that, and for another, remember these were the letters voted the very best in the entire school. Of course the best writers were going to win. I don't think that's too difficult to understand.

The letters are that poignant, funny and sweet blend of "look how grown-up I am" and childish interpretations (like the twenty cans of Coke) that kids so often use.

The local schools to me back east and the local schools here, in California, have been sending letters and care packages to the U.S. soldiers in Iraq literally for years in support of what's happening there, BTW. I'm a liberal...and it has always brought a tear to my eye to see little ones getting together to decide what the yummiest cookies are to send, and what to write in their letters. I think it's quite telling that little children can be mature enough to do this, while adults here on this forum act years younger than they by begrudging this next bunch of children their efforts at writing a simple letter.

I'm as tree-hugging, granola-crunching and cloth diaper and cloth rag washing as a barefoot hippie can get and I never once thought of children's desire to comfort soldiers in Iraq--in drives instituted by the schools--was "brainwashing". I've been through some very, very, very hard times--some of which would shock just about anyone--but I am flabbergasted by the depth of cynicism some people have. Grow a heart. And grow up.
Jerz, I can't rep you, but that was an excellent post

I'd like to see you stand in front of their classroom and say that to their faces. I didn't vote for Obama, but I myself thought about writing him a letter, because he's THE PRESIDENT!

I know that after the last 8 years you're used to being lied to and manipulated by those in power. But lighten up. Not everyone is a liar or manipulator. School children regularly write letters to the president and eight-year-olds write cute letters.

The piece says these are the letters that each class voted on as the best. Are you saying the school, as well as Newsweek, are lying?

The letters "appear to be typed"...maybe that's what confuses you?

Obviously, Newsweek cleaned up the spelling, paragraphed them, etc... otherwise I think it would be just a little too precious.

these sound just like kids, to me. And they're the "best' letters of each class.

Are you saying...Newsweek, as a loyal part of the liberal media, is promoting Obama using helpless children as human shields...said children having been brainwashed by their brainwashed/manipulating teachers and parents.

Dear President Obama,
Congratulations on winning the election for president of the United States of America. I was so happy that history was made. Not so many times you wake up with an African-American president. My family, friends and teachers were so happy and my principal cried.

Dear President Obama,
When I found out you were President of the United States of America, I was so enthusiastic! When I was informed I was at my mom's house. I was so happy I jumped off the walls and off my bed. I felt like I drank twenty cans of Pepsi and Coke in one gulp. I wonder if you will ever help us have a better school.

Your election has changed my hopes and dreams because when you were elected that made me think that a black man can do anything if he believes. Also, that tells me that you have raised the bar for Americans all around the United States of America. I have a dream that you will help all the poor people on the street, on the train and in the train station. Actually, all around the United States.

My favorite is thepart about helping the poor people on the streets, train ,and the train stations!
