‘You Opened A Door’: Schoolkids' Letters to Barack Obama
After Barack Obama's election, the teachers at Alain L. Locke public school in Harlem, N.Y., asked their third, fourth and fifth graders to write letters to the president-elect. Each classroom voted on their favorite letter, published here.
Dear President Obama,
Congratulations on winning the election for president of the United States of America. I was so happy that history was made. Not so many times you wake up with an African-American president. My family, friends and teachers were so happy and my principal cried.
Dear President Obama,
When I found out you were President of the United States of America, I was so enthusiastic! When I was informed I was at my mom's house. I was so happy I jumped off the walls and off my bed. I felt like I drank twenty cans of Pepsi and Coke in one gulp. I wonder if you will ever help us have a better school.
Your election has changed my hopes and dreams because when you were elected that made me think that a black man can do anything if he believes. Also, that tells me that you have raised the bar for Americans all around the United States of America. I have a dream that you will help all the poor people on the street, on the train and in the train station. Actually, all around the United States.

Awww, its so good to see that the public school system is so bi partisan. What a load of crap. I am so tired of these public school teachers pushing their liberal ideals on little kids. Those kids have no idea the socialist crap that this guy stands for, neither do most american adults.

Or the adults have no problems with his "socalist policies". What's wrong with children writing letters of admiration to the President? I'm sure every President has gotten letters from school children.

Based on the big words and error free spelling of theses "Kids" I cant see what NObama could do to help thier school. And if I drank "20 cans of Coke" I would feel sick--not elated

Once again, I find my self terribly confused, like on the Pelosi contraception thread, I need help reconciling your criticism and the all too common comment that blacks need to stop being victims, that they need to get an education and learn to succeed. So, I'm a bit confused that when black children write about the how an African American president gives them the inspiration (regardless of political philosophy) to achieve, that this is some nefarious liberal plot on the part of the school system.
