Interesting to note that Duke first ran as a Democrat and couldn't get elected. After he changed to the GOP he had considerably more success.

Folks can make of that what they will.

Isn't this the same crap republicans spew 2 years ago when they lost control of congress, about how righteous they are, how they are the ones protecting Americans, and how they are going to take back congress in 2 years because they are the ones for Americans. Look like Americans see through their crap and they lost even more seats this time round. Makes me LOL every time I think about it. They are just going to help democrats get elected again.

I wonder if Idahogie knows the difference between someone who served in a state legistlature and a guy who has been in the US Senate for 50 years? Byrd sure has a lot to apologize for... In 2001, he said this:

"My old mom told me, 'Robert, you can't go to heaven if you hate anybody.' We practice that. There are white ******s. I've seen a lot of white ******s in my time. I'm going to use that word. We just need to work together to make our country a better country, and I'd just as soon quit talking about it so much."
CNN.com - Top Senate Democrat apologizes for slur - March 4, 2001

Not as bad as what he said many years ago:
“I shall never fight in the armed forces with a Negro by my side... Rather I should die a thousand times, and see Old Glory trampled in the dirt never to rise again, than to see this beloved land of ours become degraded by race mongrels, a throwback to the blackest specimen from the wilds.” — Robert C. Byrd, in a letter to Sen. Theodore Bilbo (D-MS), 1944,

But apparently he has not changed much...

Yeah, but that doesn't make his point for him. Gotta pick and choose the bigots that work for your argument.

Admittedly, but it was still one term MORE than he had as a Democrat. In fact, as a Democrat he couldn't even get past the runoff elections - nor even get more than half as many votes of his Democratic rivals.

As a Republican he did much better - winning one election flat out, and was the top Republican in the Governors race (winning out over fellow Republican Buddy Roemer in the first round of elections (in essence the Primary)) before being trounced by Democrat Edwin Edwards in the final election.

Clearly his successes were relatively modest, but they ALL came after he switched sides to the GOP.

Um, the KEY WORD there was WHITE.
Let me repeat that "WHITE".
He wasn't picking on Black people. He was the using the N word as a reference to "lower class Whites". Admittedly it was crude and in very poor taste, but it doesn't indicate a White Supremest philosophy. It doesn't take a brain surgeon to figure that out.

Clearly the NAACP thinks pretty highly of his voting record since they - in their Congressional Report Card for the 108th Congress (2003–2004), he was awarded with an approval rating of 100 percent for favoring the NAACP's position in all 33 bills presented to the US Senate regarding issues of their concern. Only 16 other Senators of the same session matched this approval rating. Now, I'm sure you're not impressed with that rating, but ANY THINKING PERSON will see that as pretty good evidence that the NAACP doesn't consider him a White Supremest.

My bad if David Duke actually recanted his nonsensical white supremacist KKK bigotry. I guess I'll just have to recommend Jindal until I find another Republican with even fewer qualifications with a greater appeal to the bigots of America.

Well gosh darn it, who would possibly want a "foundation for lasting prosperity". I guess to Kristol, Krauthammer, and the rest of the big money boys that smacks of some kind of "socialist" (because that's now their favority word for anything Obama proposes) idea like good, well paying jobs for lots of folks.

His "big" idea for how Rs can fight Obama is to somehow make sure they can get a hearing for their opposition to the "big government/nanny state, social engineering" that Obama represents.

Really Bill? You sir are an idiot. The reason that Rs are in the shi**er now is because they kept relying on the Atwater/Rove strategy of just demonizing anything and everything D with scary (COMPLETELY MEANINGLESS) catch phrases like this.
Wrong. The reason the Republican Party is in the position it is now is because they have abandoned their principles. They have become "moderates" like McCain, which really means that they are not much different than Democrats (perhaps a bit further to the right than most Democrats, but not much).

Republicans became as fiscally irresponsible as the Democrats, who gleefully supported the spending in the Bush years. From the begining of the Bush administration, Bush was criticized by the base for the out of control spending.

The "empty heads" like Palin, Boehner and Huckabee are what America needs right now if we are going to rescue the economy from the massive spending of the new administration, and the higher taxation called for, which will make things much worse. Obama has even proposed raising the capital gains rate to 20%, which should work well at sending even more companies and jobs overseas.

America already has the highest capital gains rate in the world. Is it any wonder jobs have been leaving the country? What he should have done was reduce or eliminate the capital gains tax. This would be a true stimulus.

So far, Obama is doing all the wrong things. None of what he is doing has worked in the past, and it isn't going to work this time either. Socialism (and that is exactly what it is, whether you like the word or not) has never worked anywhere in the world, and it is not going to work here.

Obama is trampling on our Constitution, and on our freedom.

The leftists fail to understand the most basic principles of America's success and what has made us the richest nation in the history of the world, with the highest standard of living. It is American business that drives the economy, and it is business, not government, that creates jobs and is the basis for wealth creation. Wealth is not finite. Wealth is produced (created) through individual effort, and investing in America's businesses. This causes business to grow, producing more jobs and allowing more people more opportunity. This is how individuals prosper, and you yourself should know this (looking at your personal profile).

People cannot buy homes on a government handout, which is what Obama offers. Handouts which come from the hard work of other individuals, and taken by force through excessive taxation (redistribution of wealth).

The reason we are in the mess we are in is largely due to this concept that everyone "deserves" as a "right" to own their home. Thus, we have government forcing banks (private business) to make risky loans that they otherwise would not make, or lose their FDIC backing. This is the essence of the CRA (Community Reinvestment Act) of the Carter administration, and expanded during the Clinton years.

It has been said that a "right" is not a right if someone else is forced to pay for it through the taxing of their property or income in order to provide it. Thus, no one has a "right" to home ownership. No one has a right to the property of another.

This is what is wrong with the Democrat Party, and their ideology. Those who work hard and earn a good income and provide a good life for their own families are demonized and punished for their success, and made to pay for the slackers in society, many of whom don't have the ambition to get out of bed in the morning.

This kind of thinking must stop, if America is going to survive for even another 50 years, let alone another 200.

Keyword there is "became", right? The Rs have been big spenders since Reagan, despite the right's talking points that Reagan wasn't a big spender. The "base" NEVER criticized Bush for the spending as they were lined up at the trough.

Try again, but try to get some facts in there.
