"Moderate Taliban" is an oxymoron and even the Taliban admits there is no "moderate" element among them. So, is Obama trying to disguise the possibility that he actually agrees with some of the Taliban's aims? Good God.
Someone needs to tell Obama that the Presidency doesn't carry an air of infallibility with it -- if he doesn't UNDERSTAND a group or issue thoroughly, then he needs to shut up. He's doing damage now.

What would ever have given him the idea the Taliban has a "moderate" wing?
What a total and complete imbecile he is.
So the Taliban are annoyed with Obama's initiative. This is a "problem" how? And when did wingers start giving a rip about what the Taliban thinks, anyway?
Speaking of imbeciles, maybe that's the reason why Bin Laden (remember him?) is still on the loose....

Has it occurred to any of the foreign policy geniuses posting here that Obama saying publicly that he would talk to the moderate elements of the Taliban is a way to identify and exploit weaknesses in the leadership? If there are elements in the group that doubt the mission, or want to go about it differently, they'll feel empowered and start to jockey for leadership. It's a classic destabilization move. The fact that a leader felt compelled to jump to the forefront and declare their unity is telling.
I have to say I'm thankful all the people bashing Obama on this thread aren't responsible for formulating foreign policy. Foreign policy is multi-faceted. Obama said while campaigning that he would reach out to our enemies, and expand communications. Whether the Taliban is comprised of any moderates or not, Obama has shown the world his willingness to have a dialogue with them. That's not stupid, that appeals to the Muslim moderates in other countries that the United States is not just a war-mongering imperialistic nation. Moreover, what the Taliban publicly says, versus what the Taliban does are two different things. The Taliban is an ideological organization that wants control of Afghanistan to impose its religious standards on the country. Prior to 2001, the Taliban, while imposing its religious strictures on the country, also brought political stability to a country that was previously divided by tribal loyalties. Karzai's government has been unable to overcome those tribal loyalties and the political instability that results. But the Taliban as rulers, were able to substantially suppress the illegal drug trade, because that drug trade was against their Islamic teachings. That the Taliban has now assisted that drug trade in thriving again is evidence of the flexibility of the Taliban agenda. While the Taliban may hate the United States, the practicality of having a dialogue with the United States may in the end outweigh their disdain for Obama. Their initial response was to be expected. How it all plays out six months down the road, may be altogether different.
