More useless deaths. Another Vietnam! This is a huge mistake. We will be there forever with no real results. We can no more be successful there than we were in Vietnam. Soon the people will get tired of the body bags coming home and demand a stop to this stupidity.

KABUL Hundreds of U.S. soldiers recently deployed near the Afghan-Pakistan border have seen clashes and attacks double in early 2009 compared with 2008, U.S. officials said. Underscoring the danger, a roadside bomb Sunday in the same region killed four U.S. troops.
The spike in violence along the border is a first indication that roadside bombs and other ambushes are likely to surge as thousands of new U.S. forces arrive in Afghanistan this year.

Did an alarm clock just go off and you discovered that there was a war going on in Afghanistan?

Afghanistan is a huge mistake, just ask the Russians. It is not a winnable situation. Sending in more troops to die is just plain stupid. I have a friend that has a son the went in there years back as a scout sniper. He said Iraq was an easier assignment than Afghanistan. The terrain is rough and extremely harsh. The bad guys there know the area just like the Vietnamese did the jungles of Vietnam. Not only that but the border is so porous that it makes catching anyone ridiculous. It is a no win situations and we will just loose more men and women for no gain.

The US was in Vietnam to prop up an undemocratic and corrupt regime, the Russians were in Afghanistan to prop up a secular marxist government in a Muslim country, the U.S. abandoned the original mission almost as soon as it began, hunting down al-Qaeda and instead to prop up an ineffectual government. So, far the Obama administration has been surprisingly silent on the issue of promoting democracy or the present regime instead focusing on destroying al-Qaeda.

The first two examples, Vietnam and Afghanistan (USSR) required capturing, and holding territory. We shall see how a purely counter insurgent campaign works out. But I'll say this, there is nothing pointless or useless in hunting down members of al-Qaeda.

I thought George made a nice little honey pot out of Iraq to draw alqueda there. Escalating the conflict in afghanistan will get Americans murdered with the same outcome handed the Soviets.

Dumb move by a dumb President

It was your dumb President who handed him that disaster.

Curiously, I imagine you expressed no such reservations concerning the grand debacle known as the Iraq war.

Yet all of a sudden you find an inner indignation with sending off solders to die in places they should never be.
