Michelle Obama enraptures girls' school: "The secret is education"
G20 summit: Michelle Obama tells children they are future world leaders - Telegraph
"Nothing in my life ever would have predicted that I would standing here as the first African-American First Lady. I was not raised with wealth or resources or any social standing to speak of."
She spoke of the importance of love, strong values, education and a "whole lotta hard work" as she described her childhood.
"Whether you come from a council estate or a country estate, your success will be determined by your own confidence and fortitude."
The First Lady put her own success down to education.
"You, too, with these values, can control your own destiny. You, too, can pave the way."
Before she left, Mrs Obama stopped to hug as many pupils as she could and was mobbed by excited girls as she leant over the stage to greet them.

Related trivia:
The [girls' school Michelle Obama visited in London]: Ninety percent of the students are from minority ethnic backgrounds. Two thirds speak English as a second language. There are 55 languages spoken at the school. It is what Americans would call a "public" school, meaning it is primarily government funded. No ethnic group makes up more than 21 percent of the student body, which is almost 1,000 girls, ages 11 to 17.
Mrs. Obama wore the same outfit she had worn an earlier day to the Royal Opera House.

How refreshing and wonderful that we have a First Lady who has earned any success that she has achieved to serve as a role model! Without being a strident feminist (like me) she leads by example. Ms. Obama shows young women everywhere that they truly can transcend barriers. Thanks for the
uplifting post!

I agree, how refreshing - and that's a good way to put it, earned her own success. I like that she's strong and unpretentious. In those videos you can see her "mom" side come out.
You know at least one of those girls will go on to achieve big, and will cite that visit as her first inspiration.

As predicted months ago, the Obamas have become extremely positive role models for the youth of not only America, but the world at large.
What a huge and welcome change of pace.

It was wonderful seeing the First Lady speak so eloquently & passionately to a group of high school girls. The students were so inspired that many were in tears. Thank God for President Obama

I was delighted with the results they achieved.
How could they have done a better job, do you think?
