Republicans also believe in restricting social freedoms, and that's the main reason why I wouldn't be comfortable being one.
Define "social freedoms". You mean, homosexuality. Right? And "gay" marriage, right? And along with that (because it isn't far behind) pedophilia, right? And marriage with multiple partners, right? Sex with minors, right?
In other words, you place no limits on anything. Right?

Republicans go after porn, drug use, gay rights, and really - anything to do with sexual expression. They advocate abstinence-only education in schools (proven to be a failure, by the way), and of course, want to make abortion illegal.
In Texas, the Republican Party wants creationism to be taught in schools as an equally valid "theory" alongside evolution. It's crazy, in my opinion.

Only an irrational mind would make such leaps. But I'm not surprised. I think of the mentality you expressed as being the "base" of the Republican Party. It's not a mentality I embrace, that's for sure.

Absolute nonsense. This isn't about Republican vs Democrat, this is about a LOCAL candidate versus a CARPETBAGGER who knows NOTHING about what would be his constituency if he were foolishly elected.

Since you're obviously passionate about politicians having long standing ties to their area and constituents would you mind providing the links to the threads where you referred to Hillary Clinton as a "carpetbagger" and even more egregious, congressman Robert Wexler who supposedly represents the Florida coast, yet has lived full time in Maryland for the past 12 years. He lists his in-laws retirement community as his home; this must really tick you off. I'd love to read those posts of yours. Thanks
Hard to read posts that don't exist by virtue of the fact that I just found this forum a few months ago.
That said, Hillary Clinton, was, indeed, a carpetbagger. She had no ties to the district she ran to represent, having grown up in Chicago and attending college in Massachusetts and Law School in Connecticut, then moving to Arkansas. And if she had pushed a local democrat out of the race, I wouldn't have been the least bit surprised if said hypothetical democrat supported the local republican over her, as being better able to represent the constituents in the area. But that didn't happen, and New Yorkers decided they wanted her to represent them, 55 to 43%.
Robert Wexler, on the other hand, sorry, not a carpetbagger. His family moved to Florida when he was a child. He grew up there, and graduated from both high school and college there. It's his "home town" and "home state". He knows Florida, the district, and its constituents' needs. And his constituents agree, since they keep voting him into elected office to represent them.
The fact that he shared his MIL's home while he was in the district instead of buying a separate home, and maintained a home in DC where he settled his family so they could all be together while he was in the nation's capital doing the business of his district, is of no concern to me. Since the beginning of this nation's history, Congressional Representatives have maintained residences in DC. Witness, for instance, NJ Republican Chris Smith, who claims an apartment near Trenton as his official residence while actually living in Northern Virginia for most of the year.
The gulf between the moderate and conservative factions of the Republican Party appeared to spread Sunday when the Republican former candidate in a contentious congressional race endorsed the Democrat.
New York State Assemblywoman Dede Scozzafava's decision was essentially a rebuke of conservative activists who had mounted a wildcat effort to ensure her defeat. She had ended her campaign a day earlier after it became clear she could not win Tuesday's special election.
It remained uncertain, however, whether her endorsement could tilt the race toward Democrat Bill Owens.

You win elections by winning moderates. At this time, it's the Democratic Party that is winning moderates. Also, 35% of Americans identify as Democrats, and 35% identify as independents; only 22% identify as Republicans.
If "hardly anyone can fit in" to this, they aren't Americans.
this notion that if people do not agree with your particular political ideology they are not (or do not deserve to be) citizens of this country is a very disturbing one.
