Times have certainly changed in the advertising world, looking at the cigarette ads, and many others, certainly confirm that.

The ads that demeaned women made my blood boil but that was life.......back then.

Some of those ads promoted wife abuse (e.g., the husband with his foot on the wife).

As a kid in the 50's I thought those ads demeaning women were just silly, like Ralph Cramden saying "to the moon Alice" while shaking his fist or Desi going to spank Lucy for something.
My parents respected each other, I never realized there was such a thing as spousal abuse.
In my marriage of 40 years now there's never been any physical violence.
We argue, of course, but there's never been any physical abuse.
Only now, seeing those ads as an adult do I feel I knew very little of the real world when I was a child....thank goodness!!!!

When one views such ads with today's eyes/perspective, they are definitely distasteful. Seeing women as inferiors was quite the norm back then. It was certainly a different time.
I heard things like spousal abuse were secret those days. People didn't air their dirty laundry, and there were few to no support groups or shelters for battered spouses. I don't know, though (wasn't born then or too young).

Does anyone remember some of the old cereal commercials where the mom would sprinkle a couple of tablespoons of sugar over the top of the cereal?
