Does anyone else find this highly entertaining? The possibilities of 3-D printing just amazes me, like how far can we (the human race) go with innovation? I don't know but I highly suggest watching this video:
Even if your not a computer geek, astronaut, or anything, I believe it will be entertaining to you.
Btw I know it's not the newest technology out but its still amazing to me; especially having the possibility of having this on your desktop. Imagine the day when we could just go on Nike.com see a pair of shoes we like and print it; that'll be the day.
One of my print vendors had/has a 3D printer back before 2008. Forget when he got it but it was one of the first. I got to see many things being printed and he did one for one of my clients. We used it as a novelty but others were producing tools and parts. I had a heck of a time explaining how it worked to clients and friends. They just couldn't grasp it.
Theres a video by Vice on youtube about some guy in Texas using them to build AR-15 rifles that I thought was really interesting.
I've never seen one that printed in powder like that though or a part that came out of the machine with moving parts.
Hope I get to own one someday. I see some on ebay going for less than $500, some of those might be junk but they still seem surprisingly affordable overall.
Go to amazon.com, look at the reviews of the printers, and you'll see that they are kind of fun, but they require tweaking, expensive materials, and don't make a lot of things.
Yes, we just bought a very basic 3D printer for prototyping stuff the engineering people come up with.
I cant wait to become trained on it!
I go to that dept after the new year. <------a little scared!
I dont know what kind it is or any specifics of it though.
There is another one they are looking into that can print on irregular surfaces. Its for mocking-up boxes and other objects. It scans the dimensions and sprays on the artwork an artist created. We dont have that one yet, but I can see our engineering department getting one if the need is there
