Well, what is with it? It definitely is a trend. One the decade will probably be remembered for. It's not just Walking Dead. In fact the tv show Walking Dead is a bit late to the party. It is based on a graphic novel that predates it, but Zombie movies have been pretty perennial for the last couple of decades. In fact it seems to have taken off ever since the remakes of the Living Dead movies. Some are great, and early in this trend: Shaun of the Dead, 28 days later, and others. Plus we've been anxious as a society for a while now. When people are anxious they tend to focus on things like that. Witness the prepping fad right now. My guess is, when the economy improves, this fad will fade back to the die hard preppers..
No, the Walking Dead came out after the zombie craze got in full swing. I personally can't stand this phase. I was getting tired of the vampire craze, but it sure beats the heck out of zombies.
What we need are some good high school "coming of age" movies with the same $!tchy looking actress playing the crusty suspicious older sister and anal school adminstrator who always get's what's coming to him in the end.
You may be joking, but I think that's exactly what we need. I'd love for a modern-day John Hughes to come along and start making bad-ass movies.
You haven't noticed that in the last few years there have been a number of movies and tv shows about zombies? When I was younger, the only movies I can remember about zombies came out in the '60s, plus that really odd movie set in Haiti, The Serpent and the Rainbow, where they had zombie dust prepared by the voodoo people.
You mean "Who do we thank for the zombie fad?" I wish I knew, but for now I'll just enjoy the fruits of it.
On a side note I'm super excited about the unscheduled and unknown but inevitable zombie apocalypse!

What's with the zombie fad?
It's a persona most Americans can directly identify with.
