A few of these have been touched on, but I LOVE the Machiavellian types, with bonus points for the ones that built themselves out of nothing:

Petyr Baelish/Littlefinger - A Song of Ice and Fire (and to a lesser extent, Tyrion and Varys...those books are filled with them!)
Ozymandias - Watchmen
Francis Underwood - House of Cards (American)
Sheev/Emperor Palpatine - Star Wars universe

Erik Lensherr/Magneto - X-men. Love the duality of being "evil" yet having a defined morality.

I know I have a ton more, I just can't think of them right now!

I absolutely loved the March sisters in Little Women, and I was also very fond of Anne (of Green Gables). Also Ramona (as in Ramona the Pest). Also both Scout and Atticus in To Kill A Mockingbird.

Movies: Homer Smith in Lilies of the Field.

TV Series: Dr. MacNeill and Alice Henderson in Christy. Rebecca Howe in Cheers.

Two favorites: Star Trek's Mr. Spock because his characterization is his inner turmoil, his inner conflict between his human half and alien half, the continual struggle to control his Emotions. By immersing myself in his character, I learned to control my own Emotions.
The other favorite is the mutant X-man, Cyclops, because of his angst. The fact that he can Not consciously control the destructive beam that blasts from his eyes, makes his angst something we can feel sympathy for. In other words, the feeling that he is an outcast and freak, but still manages to remain a decent human being.
