Years ago in elementary school, I don't remember exactly how old I was or what grade I was in but we were all assembled in the auditorium while this relatively young Asian women told us this very wacky and interesting children's story/folktale. I originally thought it to be Chinese but it could very well have been Japanese, Korean, Thai, Vietnamese, etc. I've been trying to find it on the internet for a while to no avail.
Summary:
This woman and her husband are somewhat estranged and then one day the woman is walking alone through the forest and discovers this little talking/singing bird. She's so taken in the the bird's song that she asks it to sing again while standing on her tongue. Of course, she accidentally shallows it and now has a feather sticking out of her belly button! Whenever the woman or someone else tries to pull at the feather they hear the bird sing the song again for a bit. I remember that she asks a young boy to pull it and he pulls really hard which causes the bird to sing faster. An older person pulls slowly and the bird sings slowly. Finally she meets back up with her husband and he pulls it just right for the bird to sing normally and this whole experience helps the two of them to mend their relationship.
Could you be remembering a very confused version of the fairy tale "The Nightingale"?
I don't think so. The Asian woman made the story out into a pretty big deal on it's own. At least as far as children's stories are concerned. Thank you for for responding though.
