I have a relative who is a stand-up comic, and as such I end up attending at least one or two shows a year. These shows generally feature anywhere from 3-5 comics, and I've noticed this gradual trend towards comedians using R-rated humor for 80%-100% of their sets. To me, it's just not that funny.
I don't want to give the impression that I'm easily offended. I don't mind occasional swearing or off-color jokes. But it does bother me when a performer can't seem to do anything else. Is it that "gross" and "insensitive" jokes are the only way to get laughs anymore? I hate being one of the only people not laughing, but honestly I don't get it. I really don't.
If you pay close attention to the comics who use it often (Amy Schumer, for example), what they say is not THAT funny; we are just trained to laugh at certain moments.
Henry Cho is a comedian who is clean but still funny. His routines aren't goody-two-shoes or family-friendly, by any means, but he just doesn't need to cuss or talk about vulgar topics.
Different strokes. One man's meat is another's poison...etc.
For instance, I think Jim Gaffigan is terrific, funny and warm.
And I think Amy Shumer is flat-out brilliant, funny, brave, and a terrific role model for young women today.
And so it goes.
I agree, I think funny is just funny, no matter their style (for instance, I think Doug Stanhope is brutally honest and hilarious, and he's not the cleanest comic who comes to mind, by a long shot). I do have my limits, though, on how vulgar or insulting it gets. But everyone has their own limit. Brian Regan is another one, like Gaffigan, who is very clean but so funny.
But I've seen clean material be both boring and hilarious, same for vulgar. I think it just depends on the vision or talent of the person behind it.

Someone once made a distinction between a comic and comedian. One said funny things, the other said things funny (in other words, says things in a funny way).

There's really no accounting for taste. I find the comedians of the past to be much more funny than those of today. But many people love the humor of Amy Schumer types, who I can't stand. To each his own.
There is a fine line with it just being gross and genius material. I am a huge Louis CK fan and find his material to be innovative while others may just be offended.
