Do I go from my U-verse receiver to my DVD player, from there go from the DVD to my VHS player and from the VHS to tth TV ------or what??

You probably can't do that in a chain, as the VHS player likely has nothing more sophisticated than composite video in and out.

Your TV should have multiple inputs. Connect each of the three devices to a different one.

If you need further help, a TV model number or list of its inputs would be a starting point.
