Comedian Flip Wilson burned brightly from the late 1960s to the mid 1970s then gave up the rat race.

I read in an interview of Flip that he (or his manager(s)) made shrewd business investments that allowed him to live well without working. He had burned out from the weekly series and wanted to spend more time with his family.

I'd say that Flip might have been the first black man to cross dress on Tv. Geraldine, wasn't it? I think Uncle Milty holds the title for first actor to cross dress. I'm not sure and I don't feel like looking it up. I thought Flip was so funny, I was a kid in the 70's but I got to watch stuff like Laugh-In, The Flip Wilson Show, Sonny & Cher, the Brady Bunch and The Smothers Brothers. Best tv/days ever.

Yes, to Geraldine. I watched those shows too. The Smothers Brothers got tiring after Tom kept saying Mom liked you better than me bit. Cher always putting down Sonny got tiring too. As did Flip’s high voicing it and the “Devil made me do it”. When do TV execs say enough is enough?

Some comedy concepts work better as an occasional special than a weekly series.

Remember him often.......such as each time I watch The Mod Squad (he and The Waltons were the competitors back then).

Or his God and Here come the Judge routines........"Here come the Judge, here come the Judge.....Jesse, I'm going to clean your slate!.......because I am sending you to jail to make licence plates!.....Here come the Judge, here come the Judge".

Watched The Love American Style episode with him and Rochester two years or so back.

I probably think of Andy Williams more often for Cookie Bear is more in my memory but when it comes to the variety showmen and showwomen back then, he's up next to the top.

Now that was a funny man...not like the wannabe comedians they have now.....Flip, Carol Burnett, Rodney Dangerfield.....miss them all. Jackie Gleason too.

I used to watch Flip Wilson every Thursday night at 8:00!

Who remembers his cartoon special, I think it was called Clero Wilson and the Miracle of P.S. 19 (something like that). Young Clero grew up in Jersey City, where the Statue of Liberty always had her back turned toward the city. The "miracle" (spoiler alert) occurred when she turned around and winked at Clero.

I really enjoyed TV back then, and Flip was one of them for sure. He had a very fun show.

All in the family and Columbo were also two of my favorites back then.

The Gong Show a few years later was fun and unique too.
