What one has to do, is to compare salaries and cost of living between areas.

A good calculator to do this is:

Cost of Living Wizard | Salary.com

If you had used this calculator before moving to Seattle, you would have found that you needed to make 21.7% more money to break even, and you would have found that the average increase in salary would be 11.8% higher in Seattle leaving you gong 9.9% in the hole.

This is a great tool, to compare moving to another city.

My daughter moved to Montana from Sacramento California and took a 10% cut. But came out well 12% increase in total spending power even with the cut.

She was offered a job at the same time in Silicon Valley Ca. With a $35,000 increase in pay. Would have been a cut in salary compared to Montana.

Her home is 3,700 sq. ft. 4 level very contemporary sitting on 5 acres with barn, and rail fence. She is in the county, with her driveway across the street from the best area of town. Her home cost $300,000 5 years ago and as prices have not been really hurt here is now worth about $350,000. Same property in the Silicon Valley if you could find it would be over $2,000,000. As an over 20 year Commercial Real Estate Broker and property developer I am qualified to determine values. In the Silicon Valley would have had a big price decline instead of going up in value.

Before you move compare the difference in salaries, and the difference in cost of living, and you will not find like the lady above that you can go in the hole if you move even with a raise.
