Several people who have lived in Eugene tell me that its the "Dirty Underwear Capital of the Northwest". At first I thought it was a joke, but they tell me that, due to ecological concern, its considered normal to follow a "3 day" rule. The 1st day the underwear is worn normally, the 2nd day its turned inside out, and the 3rd day the underwear is soaked in patchouli and set ablaze at sunrise to appease the Forest Gods, while the wearer goes commando as penance for being alive.

Any truth to this?

LOL!!! I had to respond since no one else did. I moved away from the PNW, Seattle area last year but am moving back to the PNW next year (you are better off in the south than in the midwest, oh my gawd it is horrid here!!!). Ok, so the PNW is VERY laid back where fashion is concerned and that may make the rest of the country think we are fashion illiterate. But, I have never heard that rumor. I think people are trying to frighten you from moving to the PNW.

This is too funny. I lived in the Eugene/Springfield and surrounding areas for 20 some odd years and I have never heard of this "ritual". Now, there may be some strange people that do this, but I don't think it's commonplace. I have no idea where these people you know that lived here actually stayed, but again, I have never seen or heard of this. Sounds as if they may be pulling your leg

He might have heard dirty underwear references and 3 day rules for washing when talking about the OWS Eugene people, but most of the rest of the people who live here are actually pretty clean and some even smell really nice!

I've lived in Eugene/Springfield for almost 10 years... And I agree with lauramc27; there may be some people who do this... BUT it is not commonplace by any stretch of the imagination. Most people pride themselves on being clean and look down on the dirty ones, as far as I'm aware.

Burning the underwear is wasteful and potentially releases harmful chemicals into the environment. We prefer to shred it, grind it in our authentic homemade Hopi cornmeal stones, mix it with organic wholegrain flour we grow ourselves, and eat it as flatbread or tortillas the next day.

Looks like I could get another day out of 'em, but these are out of here when I go to bed and they are not going back on.

I was once told in Eugene back in the days I lived in Oregon, that they would get the people all lined up in two lines facing each other for underwear changing day.

On that day, the change leader would then say, "O.K. everyone change underwear with the person across from them".

Makes about as much sense, as the one shown above.
