Not just Eugene. This happens everywhere. And not just with jobs.

This especially happens in schools, too, especially private schools. My son attended a private school in Texas where they were absolutely thrilled to have him because he was part Asian, and they were "low on Asians". It worked to his benefit, because he was able to attend a really good school, but it also felt really odd. The director of the school actually broke it all down for me, explaining that they had to maintain racial balance or they would lose some kind of funding.

The weird thing is that he doesn't even look Asian. He's only 1/4. But all they cared about was that his dad was born in Bangkok... even though our last name is Scotch/Irish!

Well I definitely do not want to be hired by a company just because I'm black and if I am I damn sure don't want them telling me they did. Some people agree with it and some don't. i want to be hired based on my qualifications and skills. But thats just me.

Well... that's fine as far as it goes but the active labor pool of African Americans in this country is beyond small and could easily be ignored with no hit to America's bottom line. In other words all ~10 million of the working African Americans in this country could be laid off tomorrow and the only people it would affect would be the excessed individuals and their families. The temptation to do just that is ever present and as distasteful as it is (that's what they said about the bailout) it is a good thing that it is being done at all in the places where it has actually been done.

I honestly don't care about people's race, I am black and my daughter's father is white. My younger sis is mixed as well (Iranian and Black) My question is how are things in Eugene as far as race goes? I just hope that people there are mellow and that its not a issue. I know there is ignorance in each state.

Hi Rhonda,

I am also considering a move to Eugene, I live in the Riverside area of Southern California. My son lives there and he loves it.

I was on the City of Eugene website and they had the statistics you are looking for on there. I don't remember what they are
exactly, but I do know they are very low for African Americans as well as other races other than caucasian.

I have never been there, but from what my son says it is very laid back with regards to race, I mean, they love Bob Marley
out there, how bad can it be.

Best wishes to you.

Xena
