Listen to Wohelo! Everything I was going to say, Wohelo already said. I will just add:

Renting is always a wise idea whenever you are first moving to a place you are unfamiliar with. Especially right now with the market like it is. (People are having trouble selling... if you buy right away, you might find yourself stuck somewhere you don't want to be...)

Also, Eugene has a great bus system. It might take a bit longer to get where you want to go, but with the bike trails and with the racks on the buses that hold your bike while you ride the bus, it is very easy to get around Eugene without a car. My elementary-age kids and I went all over Eugene on our bikes and had a blast doing it. We lived in the wonderful gilham area neighborhood. We would pick up the trail right at Beltline hwy and N. Delta hwy and ride the bike trail all the way down to the Rosa Gardens, and then Alton Baker, and then make our way over to the Downtown Eugene area to check out the Saturday Market. I miss Eugene!

Also - when you get there... go to any bicycle shop and they should have a nice bike trail map of the Eugene and possible Springfield area. It's very helpful!! They used to have a pdf file on the city of Eugene website but last I checked it didn't work.

I am sorry, but I don't know much about Springfield. I have been hearing for years that it is "up and coming" but I have also been hearing for years about the new hospital and also how Eugene is going to revamp downtown to make it alive again. ? One of the things about Eugene, is that a lot of people voice their opinions and a lot of people talk and it sort of stalls any kind of progress or forward motion. Things eventually will probably happen, they are just going to happen s l o w l y.

Unless it's a condo development, $400K cheaply built homes with no yards, or upscale shopping centers - then it all happens really fast!

I hope this works Here is a link to the City of Eugene website, the section that talks about bicycling in Eugene. On the right, you will see a "Eugene Bike Map"... maybe it will work for you! I can't get it to open. There's also lots of other good info at that website, though.
