I'm pretty sure he meant the reverse of that. He was trying to say the crime rate is higher than anywhere else in Oregon. Violent crimes are increasing and the Police aren't surprised!?
WOW some report

Has anyone seen this crime spree? How is it affecting you? Why are the police not surprised? I'm flabbergasted. I have noticed the unwashed walking around my neighborhood lately. What is the deal with not washing? It isn't just a drug thing it's something else too. Anyway that is the first time in five years I've seen them walking around this neighborhood.

I saw the story about the report on KEZI 9 it is apparently an FBI statistical analysis of the state and Eugene is the only locality with an across the board increase in all crimes. Apparently everywhere else had a downturn. The police spokesman I don't recall if it was the chief, said it was due to the loss of beds in jails causing the release of people that would if a bed was available, have been kept in the jail.

I saw an article in the Grants Pass Daily Courier today talking about that kind of. Ron Wyden was quoted talking about how it is probably going to be unlikely that Congress will continue to provide money for County Payments if it's shown that Lane County released convicted, violent criminals early when they still had Secure Rural Schools funds.

Well, we just had our LOCKED car broken into in west Eugene, my daughters had left theirs purses in there and one lost her Ipod. When I talked with the police they said it is just horrible right now. They said even if they catch them (they won't) and they are convicted of a string of car thefts they will at most spend 5 hours in jail, she said there is just no incentive for them NOT to steal your stuff. Great. They also said that Lane County was the size of Vermont (I think that is what they said) but only had like 4 police officers on duty at a time. All adds up to horrible crime I guess. We'd like to move.

I've heard that west eugene is really bad. We know a police officer and his family who used to live there, and they moved because it was so bad. It's still OK in our part of town... for now. Maybe you can move up here? (We're in North Eugene.)

I don't understand why they let them out of jail so quickly? I've never lived in a place where this happens like it does here... it really doesn't make sense?

Isn't there a jail funding issue of some sort? That's the problem in Josephine County at least. Taxpayers chose to fund building this "beautiful" jail some years back, but wouldn't pay to keep it staffed and beds open, etc. If they don't have room in the jail, then what else are they going to do them? They have nowhere to put the lesser offenders or have to make room for someone who's committed a worse crime, so off they go...

My friend who lives in the Amazon area said recently every single car down one side of her street had their windows smashed in one night. It's good practice to never leave anything valuable in your car, whether it's visible or not, and good to keep it clean so it doesn't look like you could POSSIBLY have anything valuable stashed in it somewhere.
