We're a bit too young for that. But what exactly is your point? If I write "The U.S. doesn't have a great past record re discrimination and corruption. Anybody here remember Sacco and Vanzetti?" -- would that be a pertinent statement about the United States? Especially since Sacco and Vanzetti were executed whereas Dreyfus was rehabilitated.

Yesterday there was a TV program on gypsies in Portugal. There are problems too of course, but they seem better integrated here than in France. There was a gypsy among the guests who has been elected the mayor of Torres Vedras, a normal city of 23,000. Everybody knows he is a gypsy, but hardly anyone cares, he got the absolute majority of votes.
Integration is not a one-way street. He has embraced and become part of Portuguese society rather than deliberately staying outside for cultural reasons, which unfortunately is what some gypsies still do. And these people lead the same miserable ghetto lives and face the same prejudice as in other countries.

In the US Native Americans might be the group most similar to gypsies in Europe regarding their place in society, the challenge of integrating both cultures without selling out, etc.

They CAN NOT deport them. At least not much longer. It already is illegal, but in a few years the benefits of joining the E.U. will kick in for Bulgaria etc. and it will be impossible for them to "keep them out". Damn French!

As we know by now, yes, any EU country can deport any immigrant (EU or not) who does not meet the criteria of permanent residency. But it does not bring good publicity as we have seen...

Actually, I don't think that there were any court ordered deportations -- just the bribes of 430€ per adult and 100€ per child -- and some veiled threats, of course. More than enough to buy gifts for the family and buy a bus ticket back to France. The Roma girl who begs in front of my building asks me to take pictures of her for the family, because she goes back about every six months anyway. I always take a bunch of pictures for her and print up at least 5 copies of each.

Here is her marketing tool.

They deport Gypsies, who are European but rarely deport Arabs/North African Muslims. Weird. And France does have plenty of Illegal Muslims in its borders. I guess they are afraid of Riots if they crack down on them though. Considering that the Gypsies are not to bad, atleast they dont riot enmasse over the slightest perceived threat to them.

Native American comparison is valid to a degree. The big exception however is the Natives of Europe are not Gypsies [they are from India originally]. So its more complex than that. If it comes down to it the Gypsies should adopt mainstream European culture, if a large group of Europeans were to move to Africa [today] they would be expected to adapt. And Gypsies moving to France from Romania are moving to another nation...So adapt.

The very large majority of Gypsies in France are french citizen, they are quite well integrated in the society.
The Gypsies that France deports are the illegal East European immigrant, not the French citizen who live here since sereval centuries.

It is not that I agree with this politics but the comparaison with Spain or Portugal is weird.
I don't think at all that the East European gypsies are more integrated in Spain or Portugal than in France.

France deports about 25,000 - 30,000 illegal immigrants every year, most of these illegal immigrants are not east european Gypsies.

Anyway I don't approve the deportation of illegal immigrant.

Do you have a solution?
The reason I ask, we have illegal immigrants in Canada too. Last year some were deported back to Portugal.

90% of the gypsies in Western Europe are sedentary and live in perfectly normal houses and apartments. And Minato ku is correct -- only about 1% of the persons deported from France have been Roma (although "deported" is not the appropriate word for being flown back to your home country with a cash bonus and being able to come back as soon as you want -- please refer to the title of the original post if unsure).

Jonaos clearly has not bothered to check statistics if he thinks that foreign Arabs are rarely deported from France, as well has having a problem with religion. Religion is not a criterium for anything at all in France, since statistical information regarding religions is illegal.
