Although all that could be a subconscious, and unfortunate, response to stereotypes I'd intellectually reject.
Still there is a logic to foreign or "exotic" people being more attractive. Some think it's an evolutionary response, the desire for exogamy and avoidance of incest. For North Americans a European is maybe likely to be less related to you than another North Americans. Although if that was the main issue American men should maybe find Bhutanese or Pygmy women incredibly hot and I kind of don't think we're as likely to do so as with Europeans or Latinos. Possibly European women, like Latino women, would be appealing to some Americans because the cultures are different without being too different. The language/languages are at least distantly related to ours, their cultures are essentially Western, and so forth. Then there could be just be the raw physical issues. European rates of obesity are generally lower than ours, but I think their average height is maybe higher than Latin Americans or Asians. Allowing for longer legs, etc.
And this is all starting to sound icky to me. Perhaps I should have stuck with the joke answer

I think that's what it boils down to, something different, we naturally desire someone with very different genes. And probably what might be hot to us is not to the locals as much.

Yes to the last sentence. :-)
You may be reading too much into it. Women of latin cultures are simply more feminine, on average, than the anglos are.
Anglo women have been taught to be independent, agressive, more man-like, at a much quicker pace, than the latins have. They also tend to have more square, sculpted and colder physical features.
Men ANYWHERE have it in their genes to like the quintessential feminine - although contemporary anglo men have been culturally conditioned to accept the recent behavioral changes in their females. After all, most anglo men will have a pool of largely anglo women to pick from. So most learn to like what is available. There is no other way as the species must go on.
This reminds me of one of Bill Maher's lines (pardon the raunchyness):
I F... what they give me.

The funny thing about this is, YEARS of feeling guilty or bad for being so shallow to like 'quintessential feminine' women. Especially since I'm average built - not fat - so dating petite makes sense...nontheless.
As I become an older man, I've noticed for all this 'oh men, can't they just like us for us', I have found that women are EXACTLY the same.
It is really pronounced over here in Japan/Korea. You see all these educated western women with femininist rhetoric....then you go over to a Military Bar (tons of American soldiers throughout Korea/Japan)..and you'll see these SAME women enjoying and loving being hit on by the same types of guys you've heard your whole life of them railing on against!
Let's face it...guys with broad shoulders, or large arms...muscular features...western women want them. Despite being very vocal about being disgusted by guys who like petite women.

Maybe in a 'oh, that's so exotic' way, but people tend to prefer to stick to people who are fairly similar.

Yes and no...my limited view of Latino women is they're loud and brash, and some of them look very masculine, like some of those tennis players, lmao.
On the other hand they can be very beautiful, of course...

I honestly have not dated White women so I struggle at times to understand when men hold these conversations. Over the years I've gathered that some American men's taste for European women comes off as simple exoticism (correct me if I'm wrong).
Been to England 5 times and, as far as Anglo women go, really did not see a point to make comparisons...although my eyes started to hurt from all those Ugg boots! The exotic nature only kicked in (gone now) w/ regards to Black & Indian women w/ British accents.
However, I was in Lithuania this time last year and did notice a lot of stunners, and probably would have seen more had it not been so cold.
And before anyone says "you need to visit European country XYZ", let me put it out there and say, "sure". But I doubt I would do it for Eye Candy reasons. I mean, I don't want to ruin the OP's post, but it just seems like American men aren't the topic of discussion for most European women.

Really, I have the same view of young Latin American women I've met from Mexico, Colombia, Costa Rica, and Puerto Rico. They seem to have a sense of kindness, affection, and **femininity** that is completely lacking among local (Upper Midwestern) college-aged girls. Moreover, they seem to warm up to you faster in 5 minutes than a local girl would in 3 months. As a bonus, they are mostly Catholics.
I think the reason the OP thinks European women are so hot is because they are exotic to him. There is a world of differences between women (and men) in say, Finland, Greece, and the United Kingdom.

When I visited Europe, the people there, women or not, seemed to take some pride in visually ID'ing Americans. from there, they often assumed our personalities, and of course many of them, politically speaking, dislike us. We're apparently arrogant, loud, wild-spending, drunken, arrogant and loud. Did I forget anything?
Truth be known, we, all 330+M of us, are quite different, not so homogeneous as the Liberal-socialist government-think Euro culture. You want to pigeonhole us on the basis of young college students first time away from strict parental control? Well I guess everyone in Europe is just like that Italian Prime Minister then, or the French version. Right? womanizing, arrogant and no doubt politically compromised.
I've been around the world a bit and physically, I prefer Korean (south-, at least; classic looks: straight, tall and finely featured), as well as Indian women (beautiful! Those eyes! Yowzers!!!).

British women? German girls? Arrogant Yank-hating socialist French girls with unshaven armpits? Perhaps not so much. Mid-Western American girls? Too much corn-feeding, Kraft Mac'n'Cheese or casseroles made with Campbell's Cream of Mushroom Soup (But... but! That's a Classic food!") and grits I'd say.
But those California girls, at least the ones who willingly venture down to the beach in a string? Some selective behaviors going on I'll bet, but still; they do look awfully good. I know; it's a truly sexist world though, and you girls know it. And those girls from Arizona, Colorado and Montana? Maybe it's the "horse" in the water perhaps? Long, leggy and smart. And they can shoot and ride! Wow!

I don't know about French women unshaven armpits and how gross that is, but I do know that men unshaven armpits ( yes, I know shaving it is not the custom ) are not that appealing either.
Most men just don't care about their look - when they are bold, fat, hairy, have missing teeth, dirty nails, pants showing cracks, 3-day old facial hair and bad breath - they still think that they are handsome and absolutely adorable, and have big enough ego to ask a gorgeous looking women for a date. No self criticism at all.....
