Hello. I'm from Puerto Rico and I can tell you that many American's perception of Spanish people is the same as it is for me. Somehow many Americans think everyone who speaks Spanish is Mexican, and we call anyone from Latin America Spanish, despite most of us have little to no connection to Spain.

Well I say you can visit Puerto Rico, which as you know, is part of the U.S. and we speak Spanish so language won't be a problem, and it's a tropical island with a rainforest

I think calling everybody from Latin America "Spanish" is an east coast thing. My ex-girlfriend was from New York and was really half Spanish (mother's parents were directly from Spain not white Latin Americans) and even she did it. While growing up on the west coast I never really heard anyone call people Spanish.

Travel recommendations: It depends how much time you have and where in the US you will be flying into as the US is so big, it also depends if you want to see nature or cities. If you go to the West coast in summer, I would recommend Seattle and Vancouver (Canada but very close) for a combination of nature and nice cities. The combination of mountains and Islands is hard to beat if you like that sort of thing. San Francisco is also really nice and the entire coast line of California is very beautiful. I really like the central coast which is Santa Barbara area. There are many other places in the US to see but it really depends on what you are looking for and how much time and money you have. Unfortunately, with the exception of the Northeast cities, most of the US is built around car culture and it is difficult to travel without a car. (With the exceptions of maybe San Francisco, Chicago, New Orleans and few others) You may want to think about renting one if you plan to travel anywhere outside of the Northeastern cities. Good Luck.

Oh I'm going to Spain in May (Madrid and Barcelona). My ancestors are from Asturias. That will be another trip someday.

Have you been to Miami? Maybe go to New York City (don't need a car) then come to Miami, where you will need a car but language will not be a problem.
