I will be flying from the US to the UK with a connection in Iceland the second week of September (the arrival is around 6:20 a.m.). My connection is about 1 hour and 20 minutes. It's to my understanding that I will have to go through security and passport upon arrival in Iceland even though I'm not leaving the airport. Is the passport check fast? I'm concerned I won't make my connection in time. I've been in some pretty nasty lines for passport control before but I've never been to Iceland so I'm not sure how much traffic they get, etc. I just really don't want to miss my flight!
Never done that trip but if the connection is 1 hour 20 then they'd have thought it through in advance and know it's possible. Chances are there'd only be one or two flights coming in at that time and it's a tiny airport anyway - just make sure you're quick getting off the plane and you should be fine.
Which is in some ways recent. The book I have on Iceland is only a few years old and it mentions their independent ways and unwillingness to join much with the EU. I think even now they're not officially in the EU, or are they?
Never heard of any problems connecting through KEF. The process seems to be inconvenient but it is a small airport and I'm fairly certain the measures were created with that in mind. The only problem you may encounter would be if your flight coming into KEF is delayed or if you booked with Iceland Express.
I've connected through KEF 4-5 times the past few years. You should have plenty of time. I've always found passport control to be pretty efficient there. Oh, and Iceland is not in the EU. They are a Schengen member country, so basically, when you enter any country that signed that agreement, you are treated as if you entered the EU.
I jsut did that last week. We were flying from NY to Paris thru Iceland. We had about the same time of a stopover and it was plenty of time. We even had time to have a late dinner on the way there.
On the way back, we had an hour stopover and again, had lunch there.
You will have no problem at all.
Have fun. It was awesome to have breakfast in Paris, lunch in Iceland and dinner in NY. What an experience for our kids.
