I'll be in Italy end of October-November for work. My boss is graciously giving me 11 days' free time after work is finished to stay and relax; I plan on having a home base in Northern Italy and traveling from there.
Consider that N. Italy weather is like New York weather (maybe a little bit more humid and gray on average where I am staying compared to NYC), and I want to travel and see some awesome places. Something not too far away by either plane or train and that won't break the bank.
Germany? Will it be too cold? Vienna? Croatia? What's a great sort of one-two day trip that won't be hard on my wallet but also won't be so cold I can't do much? I don't mind cold weather but I don't want to be caught in a blizzard!
Europe for the most part has mild weather so snow storms shouldn't be a worry.
Croatia is cheap but I am not sure what you would fancy. The Adriatic coast is lovely but might be a tad cool and windy during the fall year.
Vienna is beautiful in the fall but pricey. Salzburg and Innsbruck in Austria are also a good choice.
In Germany the southern parts of Bavaria such as Munich and Nuremberg are very nice but as vienna are also very expensive. If you want cheaper go the the eastern part. Dresden is breath taking and cheap. Leipzig is also very pretty and cheap.
Berlin has lots of history and contemporary art culture. Very vibrant and cheap.
For good budget places that are nice I would also recommend Poland and Hungary.
What about the coast of France or Spain. Warmer, not too far by train. Like Perpignan, or even the islands of Spain like Mallorca. I think you could reach some coastal France in a 10 hour train ride. Mallorca would require difficult travel but wow, it's amazing. As far as cost it depends on what you mean by cheap, that means different things to different people. You can do a cheap trip using the train, some packed food and lower budget overnights or bed breakfast kind of places.
I'm thinking budget places no more than 100 dollars per night. I want a place with lots of museums and indoor stuff to do as it will maybe be cold. I'm leaning towards Austria/Germany. Or if all else fails I could go back to Bolzano and Merano in Italy as I absolutely loved those places.
Germany, well, depends. If you are lucky that time of year still feels like fall, with sunshine and mild temps. But if winter sets in early, it can be a gloomy place.
But even northern Italy can be quite gloomy, lots of winter fog in the Po valley for instance...
Like the northern regions of the USA, northern Europe experiences short days and weak light during the winter season. That said, the climate is considerable more temperate than much of the US and the crowds are blessedly gone. I've traveled in Germany, France, the Netherlands, Belgium, and the UK during the spring, fall, and winter and I'd say the winter is by far my favorite time to visit. I love Europe's relaxed pace and relative quiet (not to mention the reduced rates) during the winter months.
You should just pick the city or area you are interested in and go. You won't regret it.
Tenshi- I lived in Italy for two years and have visited Rome more times than I can count. Not interested in seeing too much of Italy this time! I haven't gone to Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Poland, etc. yet and I'd rather do that this time.

Gotcha. I thought maybe if you were in the Northern part of the country, perhaps you hadn't seen it yet.
I say go to Prague -if you haven't yet-, you won't regret it.
