I’m from Ukraine and majority of people here define geographical position of their country like East Europe. But Ukrainians use such definition due to economical development of Ukraine in comparison with countries, which represents European Union. Rich countries (members of EU) - West Europe, poor countries – East Europe.

Turkey - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Look at the map - the little crumb north west of the Bosporus is European, the "rest" is Asian. I think your question is answered.

I know CBB. It was a wry comment regarding Turkey's aspirations to join the EU.

Just like the vast majority of Europeans, I do hope that this never happens. We have already to cope with Eastern European countries like Bulgaria and Rumania which took the EU hurdle. Way too early, btw.

Eastern Europe = former commies, that’s how it works in most heads.

EE is a political not geographical term. Don’t think folks using this term are “stupid” or “ignorant”- people/media tend to simplify things, that’s all.

I live in Croatia. We’re Eastern Europe? Well, fine with me. Can’t figure out why being considered EE is so “bad”.

I am not from Romania , but if you read a little bit about it, it has one of the stringest economy, it will come up faster then any "Eastern European" country. They are very well educated, most of them speak more languages then those living in "Western Europe" and their universities are recognized everywhere in the world.
Of course there is another side of it, a population who never left the remote villages or never aspired for degress or anything more the civilization can give.
But have a look at other WE inhabitants.
I live in US and many of the people have no clue what Puerto Rico's status is or they think Hawai is abroad and they need a passport go there.

It can happen everywhere, not only Romania, trust me.

Actually Eastern Europe is a good thing among a lot of business people lately. Now, Eastern Europe is called "new Europe" in the business world, and Western Europe is considered "old Europe".
New Europe = many EE countries that have opened their doors to business from other countries to bring investment and jobs. Slovenia, Croatia, Slovakia, Czech Rep and some of the Baltic countries are good examples of that, with pretty healthy economic growth. In contrast, most of old Europe (western Europe) is much harder for new businesses from outside to come in and invest and set up operations.
