Consider staying in convents. They're affordable, have great locations, and no one is going to mess with nuns.
Do you like nightlife? Because convents usually have curfews (11 pm or so).
Try laterooms.com; airbnb.com; hotelscombined.com; bedandbreakfast.com, etc.
If I could find accommodations around large cities in Paris for under 50€, you can do it in Italy.
I'm thinking like 50-70 E per night, more or less central or at least close to public transport. Actually I don't want anyone to search travel websites (I can do that myself), but if anyone stayed in a particular place that they liked and that might escape my attention when going thru zillions of search results, that' s what I'm interested in.
Your convent suggestion is interesting, but I think we want to stay out a bit later than that.
