If you gonna fly there, wouldnt it be more convenient to rent it here and picked it up at the airport? Thats what we always do, we use a travel site and get the best price. The process is the same as here in the US, just make sure you rent an automatic car if you can't drive stick shift. I have driven automatic cars without a problem, even in mountainous areas like sierra nevada.

I always use Hertz. Maybe not the cheapest but always reliable and you can book your car online from the USA.

Word of warning .... European car renters (including the international ones like Hertz/Avis) tend to be much pickier about minor damage than they are in the US.
