We have an opportunity to stay in Mandela or Anzio in March. Does anyone know which area would be easier to use as a home base for exploring Rome? Either on significantly "nicer" than the other?

Any opinions are welcome!

Hope you get your answer before your trip. I don't know about these areas, but I will bump this for you.

Good morning.

Not familiar with Mandela but I passed through Anzio very frequently while living in Italy (I lived in Latina). I would go with Anzio with it being on the coast. Cozy little seaside town, not as congested as Ostia, plenty of restaurants and shopping available. I'm not 100% sure if the city has a train station or not but Aprilia and Pomezia definitely do. Enjoy your trip.

I stand corrected:

"Anzio is connected to Rome by the Via Nettunense (SS207), the Via Ardeatina (SS601) and by the Roma-Nettuno railroad that stops in the stations of Lavinio, Villa Claudia, Marechiaro, Anzio Colonia and Anzio".

Hope this helps.

Anzio and Mandela aren't close to Rome: even though they are part of its metropolitan area... As far as Rome is concerned, I suppose you're interested in the historical center: from Anzio and Mandela it's more than 1 hour... during the rush hour it's up to 2 hours... not a big deal, if you ask me
Anyway, both them aren't exactly beautiful towns: along Rome's coastline, Sperlonga is the only nice town.

Anzio to Rome takes 1-2 hours? Walking? Granted I'm a speed demon but I could drive from Testaccio/Trastevere back to Latina every evening in under an hour.

Also, San Felice Circeo > Sperlonga IMHO.
