The majority of Sicily's eastern coast has decent beaches, from Messina to Siracusa (Syracusa) and around the cape to the southern side. No complaints! They are warmer than Portugal's beaches, though the beaches on the Algarve are cleaner, have better sand, and are more attractive.

I guess that the only people that enjoy the only nice beaches left are people with yachts. They can visit beach coves in Costa Brava, Sardinia or Greece, but during June and August everything is crowded. We have 5 marinas here, go and figure!! Some beach coves in Costa Brava are so packed with yachts that access has been forbidden temporarily.

I do not think that the Mediterranean is a beach destination. In fact, I can't figure what do they find in our beaches. It was OK after the war, or even in the 60's, but now? Tourism has wasted everything.

Tell that to the Sicilians....that they are il "terzo mondo." Sounds like a Northern Italian, and or an American.

Fontane Bianche, south of Siracusa (Syracuse), Sicily:

Lido di Jesolo, Jesolo, Veneto (northern Italy):

Take your pick! I've been to both. Sicily, Puglia, Calabria and especially Sardinia win hands down!

This is Meia Praia in Lagos on the Algarve south coast.

Is Italy or Portugal famous for beaches? Usually I just hear of Spain, France, Croatia and Greece for beaches-zzmeiapraia.jpg

One of the better beaches on the Portuguese Algarve and fortunately off the beaten path so that every tourist isn't stomping on it!

Posting a picture is quite pointless, in fact ok, it's an amazing beach, but unfortunately it doesn't change the fact that the majority of Sicily coastline has been devastated by an endless urban sprawl of ugly, ultra-cheap buildings.
Period.
And in fact I am from Southern Italy: I know the South very well, whereas you probably know just the touristic destinations. But I understand that a lot of Americans see Italy with rose-colored senses...
I assure you that such cities - with few exceptions - "offer" urban standards comparable to Latin America's ones...
Have you ever been to Palermo, Messina, Naples, Reggio Calabria?

Read my profile for previous locations and how long I lived there.

Naples is a dangerous armpit and I've gone with security escorts - my cousins who live in one of its suburbs. Grazie, ma no!

Calabria's beaches are not near Reggio. They are near Tropea. Puglia's beaches are near the heel, south of Bari.

I've been all around Sicily. There are a lot of beaches that DO NOT have cheap buildings in sight....Marina di Noto, Marina di Ragusa, San Leone near Agrigento, Tindari, Lampedusa, beaches to the west of Messina, Eraclea Minoa, and on and on....just get in the car and find them.

At the end of the day, Sardinia's beaches are the best. Sardinia is an anomaly, neither Southern nor Northern. Even Cagliari, Sardinia's capital, has great beaches.

I just came from a walk all along the promenade that borders five or six beaches and coves in Sitges, 36 Km south of Barcelona.

Oh, yes, very beautiful, but the water is FREEZING...I you take a dip, you come out PURPLE and we are nearing May....and all the beaches up north (Costa Brava, French Riviera, Croatia are FAR COLDER.

Unless you are a penguin, bath is only possible from 20 June until the first weeks of October (if we are lucky). When bathing is possible, beaches are packed with disgusting sunday drivers, chavs, tourists, gays, totes and Morrocans and Romanian Gypsies after your belongings.

Of course, 40 or 50 years ago it was entirely different, this town was beautiful.
