Honestly, german cities are one of the cleanest in Europe so i dont know what kind of germany you went to....
Maybe you should go to Manchester, Belfast or Bradford if you want to see a depressing run down city.
and i dont know where you are coming from but UK cities in general look MUCH MUCH worse than any city in Germany.

I lived in Manchester for several years and it's no more or less run down than anywhere else. In fact, there are very beautiful parts of Manchester.
Belfast has also undergone something of a renaissance over the past 2 decades. It has a beautiful city centre and some very attractive suburbs with the Antrim hills as a backdrop.
Bradford is kinda bad though.

There are a few depressing cities in Germany, yes. But also in the UK, the US (plenty there), Belgium, France, Spain, Japan and pretty much everywhere in the world. German cities are by no means the worst.

They will hesitate and will not even exchange your things even though it's their mistake.. Nothing you can do, customer service is in such a poor state in Germany.. In the grocery stores or what ever people will literally push in font of you.. You call that efficient? It's part of their culture the poor customer service.
How would you feel if you ordered a particular thing and what you received was different? And then you get blame you and refuse to accept the fact that they didn't give you what you wanted? Is that efficient? Forget your money, you'll not be seeing that again..
Things like that are unheard of in U.S.. If that was the case the person responsible would be fired and the business would get closed down anyway since no one would go there..
But in Germany, it's their culture to treat customers like crap..

Never happened to me ever. Whenever I received food (which has happened like once or twice during the 20 years I lived there) I didn't order they apologized deeply and exchanged it. No one ever refused to serve me either. Sometimes they take their time but since many people go out for dinner in order to socialize and not just to eat because they are hungry no one cares.
Perhaps this is a case of "what goes around, comes around". Treat people like you want to be treated. If you're nice to a German waitress in most cases she will be nice to you as well.

So what gives..?
I went to Berlin, Frankfurt & Munich
I regret the trip and it was a massive waste of money..
I highly recommend people who want to go to Germany to actually consider going some place else.. Unless you have a facination with gloomy, depressing, dirty and rude cities..
I could of just waited a bit and would of went to Tokyo Japan and Okinawa islands and then Hawaii.. But stupididley choose Germany!!!

Frankfurt, and especially Munich, are the nicest cities in Europe. Troll post.
So you're from LA. huh? LOL. Anybody who has been to LA knows it's a run down **** hole. Still doesn't beat Detroit, though, but it's a close 2nd. I used to live there.

Were those the only three cities you went to ?
No side trips into the country whatsoever ?
If you went on a tour, can you let us whom with,
so other potential tourists will not use them !!
I feel really bad about your *experiences*,
because Europe is really NOT what you think it is !!!

Dumbass. Dont feed the troll. Actually German cities are very clean as compared to other European cities. Berlin is a big city, hence, "gritty" and dirty too. However, there are many residential and posh parts which are extraordinarily clean and green. Far from being depressing. Same goes for any other of the mentioned cities. Mate, never been to London, Birmingham, Los Angeles, NYC or Chicago?! Any large city is quite dirty. Based on your standards I think you should rather visit a place like Zurich or Geneva. They are as vibrant, varied and exciting as a cemetery but very clean.

some random streets. Looks "third-world-ish", aint it?!

I have lived in Germany as well as in the US and traveled a lot through both countries. Overall German cities are cleaner, more modern, and better maintained than cities in the US.
The big cities in the US made a run down impression on me. The economic crisis really shows its effects. Old and poor infrastructure, empty strip malls, empty buildings and houses and lots of homeless people.
I can imagine that if the TS traveled by train through Germany that he/she did not get the best impression. German cities are not at their nicest at the railway stations.
Actually, Munich is one of the nicest cities I have ever been. It is also very popular for Germans as well as foreigners to visit and live.
Overall, I can't agree with the TS. (And I am neither German nor American). Maybe the TS just does not like the European 'style' of things here in Europe. I also miss the skyscrapers, the wide streets, the big cars, and the American building style here in Europe.

One should go to Germany for the quaint villages, the castles (Neuschwanstein, 19th century looks like a Diney castle, pretty though) and ...nature, surprinsingly, this industrial nation has vast tracts of protected areas like the region around Müritz see in the north east , the Wattenmeer on the North sea coast, the Bavarian Alps, etc. But German big cities I concur are gloomy.

German cities were beautiful before the war, but after the pounding they took there was no way to reconstruct them. For example, apart from Americans bombing during the day and English during the night, Berlin was pounded to dust by 14,000 Russian cannons just before surrender.
Berlin was one of the most beautiful city in Europe.
