Is it illegal to put up the Nazi flag outside the house? It would be similar to flying the confederate flag in the United States, especially in the Southeast portion.

Southerners didn't try to exterminate every non-Aryan in a gas chamber and take over the world. It's not the same thing. The Confederate flag is just a simple of the South, and not every Southerner fought to preserve slavery.

But yes, it is illegal to display any sort of Nazi flag in Germany. I'm pretty sure, at least.

some germans are surprised its not illegal in other countries. a german friend of mine in bkk had a swastika on the back of his helmet for a long time. i remember a few situations where we'd roll up to expat/touristy bars and german ppl would freak out when they saw it. i dont speak the language so don't know what exactly they were saying but many thought it was illegal to wear swastika in thailand lol

Yes, it is illegal and the penalty for ignoring the ban is either a fine or prison up to three years. Scientific or historical use (and some sorts of artistical use) are exempt from that ban. Religious use (the swastika in Hinduism, for example) is exempt from the ban, too.
You could have figured that out yourself by using Google or Wikipedia directly. Takes less than 20 seconds.

You should reconsider the meaning of the expression 'thought crime'. Hint: It has something to do with 'thought'.

It has nothing to do with PC! Its a symbol of evil, violence and genocide associated with the Nazi movement.
