Tell me about it, I've done it 5 times (don't ask). Even when you have visted and like it getting down to the nitty gritty of working, paying bills, dealing with government agencies etc. is really tough. However if someone likes the place at least they have a measure of commitment.

It's tough at first no matter how much you like a place. I was shocked at the differences between the US and UK. Said or did stupid things because I just didn't know.

Got a new culture shock coming up next week. Uganda. 2 years. Volunteering. Leaving my beloved Scotland.

Tell me about it. I especially disliked dealing with our local city council or HMRC.

Sweden is too flat, and Denmark too. Spain is relatively good. Italy has too muck korruption. And the eastblock countries, you want to stay away from. Austria and Switzerland are great. In England they are too stiff, he.he. No, Norway is best, an excellent nature, and the economy is very good.
Interesting comments, harald. Yes, of course Norway economy is good with the oil boom, good social organization, relatively low corruption, and a relatively small population, ingredients for socialism that actually works.

What about immigration policies? Is it difficult for a North American or European to settle there?

For those of you who don't know, Norway is not part of the EU. And why should they join and share their oil revenues with flat Swedes and Danes, stiff Brits (Scotland wanted to succeed so as not to share oil revenues), and mucky korrupt Italians?

What about taxes in Norway? Do you think you get a good deal for the money? The cost of living in general with respect to income after taxes?

What about the winter? Don't you freeze your butts off? Or is heating oil relatively cheap?

I never had a problem in France. I do speak French but I do have an accent in French and I make the odd mistake so it's obvious I'm not French...they never hassled me or gave me a hard time. I encountered a lot of French people who didn't like our government but nobody there was hostile to ME as an individual. As long as you don't take spirited political conversations personally, you'll be fine in France. They're much more polite about it than the British are, that's for sure.

Hi Mexi,

I believe that harald is saying the Austria and Switzerland are great, but he is warning against eastern Europe, for whatever reason.
